I was wondering if anyone knows why the Zimmers game in the REA auction is only at 12k. I was under the impression that this lot was going to sell at a much, much higher price. Any thoughts?

I think I'd rather own the Baltimore News Ruth card - it is a bit of a surprise that the Zimmer is sitting that low at this point, but that number could really spike on the last day.

The Zimmer Game could still easily double. All it takes is two determined bidders with money. And without the "individual lot closing rule", this auction figures to go into the "wee hours" of the night.

There is a very small market for a baseball board game that might sell for upwards of 50 grand. I suspect that some of the players in this market may be aware of the discovery of what may be a superior example of this game in an historic house in Missouri. There was a post on the Yahoo baseball games group about this:

The people that control the historic home are apparently unsure whether to sell the game, which--by the way--includes elements of the BOX!! At one point there were pictures of the game posted and it is in as remarkable condition as the REA example, especially when you consider the box. The pictures disappeared shortly after posting and there was (I believe) a reference to the discovery on this board. It is not too far a stretch to think that this find is being pursued by
one or more of the aforementioned players (and that would include an auction house or three.) It is also not too far a stretch to posit that a starving historic society might actually opt to sell something they didn't even know they had.

This may explain the "low" price...the market might be flooded!

It might be that the people in the market for the game are holding out for the Missouri example, but from what I've heard that game may not go up for sale.

IMO somebody got one helluva deal here. The Zimmer game, depiciting accurate color images of the games leading players, is far and away the grand daddy of baseball board games. It frames remarkably well and hung up on the wall is an incredibly stunning display piece. It is genuinely rare in any condition. While the one in REA was missing the bat, a replica can be easily created, thus preserving the display potential of the item.

The last two high-condition Zimmer games (which may also be the last two transactions of this game in any condition) took place some 7-8 years ago or so. As I recall each sold in the $27K-$28K range, though both had the box cover and one also had some of the game pieces. One of those, while gorgeous, was in slightly lesser condition that the one in REA; the other was in comparable condition. The condition of the REA example was nothing short of remarkable. IMO what hurt it the most was missing the bat. How that impacts a bidder is of course entirely subjective. Speaking only for myself, it would have a very material impact on how high I would bid, and may in fact stop me from bidding altogether. As has been said so many times, it takes two to tango. For an item such as this with probably a limited collector base, loss of even just a single big player can have a big impact on realized price.

I don't think I posted this previous. I found another example of a Zimmer on my site which I forgot about till recently. If you click the link below and scroll down to lot 760 there are links to a Zimmer I saw in Steve Wolters' collection in 2005. The links to REA don't work since REA reformated their site a while back, which I need to re-do.
