A friend of mine asked me about this Maris signature and wants an opinion. It's an FDC that has been postmarked one year after his passing. It is authenticated by JSA. Thoughts?

Looks like a good sig. I know some of these FDC collectors would get them hand stamped, even after they died sometimes.

The FDC would have been printed in 1983 if it was commemorating Ruth's stamp:

If you're familiar with Joe Gerson's extensive signed cahcet collection, he had several of his envelopes stamped after the player passed away. It just makes things confusing for everyone else, especially people who aren't extremely familiar with the autographs at hand. To somebody who may lack the knowledge to be able to see past the post-mortem cancellation, it would just seem to them to be an obvious "fake" because of the postmark.
Regarding this one, it's obviously not a FDC with a 1986 postmark from the philatelic expo in New York City for the 1983 Ruth stamp. Then, they added the 1939 Centennial stamp to it as well?! Last edited by BillyCoxDodgers3B; 03-30-2025 at 06:31 AM. |

October 1, 1986, is significant to Roger Maris because it marked the 25th anniversary of the day he hit #61
