I'm trying to identify the US player on the right of the card. I feel fairly certain that the US player on the left is Clyde Lovellette. I think the player on the right may be Bob Kurland, as he was the tallest player on the team at 7 feet, but I can't tell for sure. I looked for a profile shot of him facing left from that time period, but came up goose eggs. Any help would be appreciated!

This card shows the game between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. played on July 28, 1952 (Group B, Game 2 in Round 2) at the Tennispalatsi. Attendance was 1984. The U.S. won 86-58.
The players left to right are - Ron Bontemps, Anatoly Konev (#9), Otar Korkia (jumping) Unidentified U.S., Dan Pippin and Stepas Butautas (#4). I would have guessed Lovellette on the left and Marcus Freiberger on the right. Freiberger wore knee pads with the white back. Kurland's were usually darker.

Wow. Thank you, Michael! How were you able to identify the US players?

Thanks again, Michael. I was able to find that press photo on eBay:
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/rmAAA...LCp/s-l960.jpg I do, however, believe that the caption is incorrect. Based on the team photo in the link that Jewish-collector provided, I think the 2 US players (L-R) are Lovellette and Bontemps. Compare the photo of Bontemps below to the image on the card: https://basketballmuseumofillinois.c...n_Bontemps.jpg My hope was that I had found a playing-days issue of Bob Kurland, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Is anyone aware of one (card or postcard)? |
