Is there an easy way to tell if this is a picture of Fielder Jones in his 1914/1915 St. Louis Terriers uniform, or a later St. Louis Browns uniform?

But suppose it's possible those jerseys were similar. Would have to search for photos of the Federal League jerseys.

Here are a few others. They look like from the same time period.....the question is which year. I'm still leaning to them being post-Federal League, regardless of how they've been labeled.

According to Marc Okkonen's work, the St. Louis Terriers did not spell out St. Louis on their uniforms in 1914, instead using the StL logo, and only spelled it out on the roadies for 1915, which were dark with white lettering. Also note that the Terriers used pinstripes, but the Browns did not.

I've pasted below an image of Jones in the StL home uniform, and a group photo of the Terriers in the dark road uniform.
Edited to add: This is the 1914 home uniform. See post #10 for the 1915 home uniform. Last edited by RUKen; 02-01-2024 at 06:50 AM. |

Ok thanks everyone. I had thought that was the case, but saw so many claiming these outfits were from the Terriers's years. Thanks again for all your time.

I am reviving this year-old thread to correct the record. The home uniform indicated for the St. Louis Terriers in 1915 by Marc Okkonen is incorrect. The Terriers had a nearly all-white uniform, without pinstripes, as seen below on second baseman Bobby Vaughn and pitcher Eddie Plank:

I'm not convinced it's a Federal League uniform at all. Looks like a Browns uniform, although admittedly it is blurry.

Unquestionably photographed at the Polo Grounds.

The Browns' road uniform had "ST. LOUIS" across the chest, not the SL logo. The 1914 Terriers of the Federal League had an StL logo on their road uniforms, but the uniforms were pinstriped (including the caps), and the Polo Grounds did not host Federal League games. I think the photo has to be at Sportsman's Park, unless it is at a spring training facility.
For another look at that logo, I've attached below an image of the Browns' Mike Balenti: Last edited by RUKen; 04-30-2024 at 04:19 PM. |
