I would have a harder time not opening one if I was lucky enough to come across one.
Unopened packs like that make me nervous, I have no discipline when it comes to things like this. B. T.

Wonder if he knew there was no possibility of a Mantle or Robinson or any high #'s? Given the value of the pack unopened - High-risk gamble right there!

I have a Topps pack run and am never tempted. I know that what ever is in those packs will not be as good as what I can always think might be in them. The mystery is the fun for me

I saw a collection somewhere online a few years back of a guy who only collects unopened packs. He had thousands of unopened packs of cards, not just sports either, Magic and stuff like that as well. Seemed kind of weird to me, but it made him happy. And he had them all displayed nicely. He said he started doing it as a kid in either the 50s or 60s, I forget exactly.

I don't think I could ever open a 1952 Topps graded pack. Knowing the value of the pack and the likelihood of getting anything good would convince me to leave it alone. Now if I had several boxes...that might be different.

Gentleman,
I have no willpower, I admit it freely. I would open it and have a good time doing it. So, don't anyone here EVER send me one. ![]() B. T.

The only "vintage" unopened packs I have are some 1951 Topps cards, not exactly the sexiest items in the hobby. However, back in 1999, when I was working in wholesale, I came into possession of a large quantity of unopened Cleveland Browns (expansion team) cards that are still cluttering up my storage room. Hard to figure why there was so little interest in them twenty three years ago that I got them for zip, but hey, there might be a Tim Couch card lurking there.

As a frequent MRI flyer this past year, I can't help but wonder. Would one of those machines be able to slice through the layers of an unopened pack and expose what cards are hidden away inside???

The penny packs you can usually tell. There is one guy on here with a big collection of scans of uncut sheets that is almost batting 1.000 in predicting which cards are in a pack if one from the front or back can be identified Darren, I hope what ever issues led you to a year of MRI’s have been successfully resolved. MRI won't, but I think some of the xray backscatter scans can.
My boss in the 90's got a demo of one being sold for security, and he could read the cover of his magazine which was inside his briefcase. |

This is why collecting anything unopened has never really appealed to me. If I were home alone with that pack for day, I'd have busted it too - although that was clearly not the best decision to make from a financial perspective.

Whoa, this is uncomfortable. I was only being a bit playful with regards to the MRIs. In the past year, I have had 4 different, unrelated surgeries. The first was a torn rotator cuff that started the MRI train rolling. Knock on wood, so far I'm doing well. Thanks, David and Anthony!!
