Good morning!
This may already have been settled, but I don't think that this card exists for these reasons: 1) I don't have one. 2) The other Dean's Photo Service sets all contain 30 cards, while the 1973 set is listed in the Standard Catalog as having 31 cards (odd). 3) I can't find an image of one on that there internet. 4) The last set I found for sale in an auction was missing the Davenport. Can anyone show me a scan of a '73 Davenport? The '73s are blank backed, and Davenport appeared in '74 and '75, so don't show me one of those to try and fool me. I wasn't born yesterday, pal. ![]() |

Someone in charge of a price guide probably mistook a 1974 or 1975 Davenport for a 1973 years ago and it stuck. It is impossible for there to be a 1973 Jim Davenport, he was the Manager of the Triple A Phoenix Giants for all of 1973 before becoming a Padres coach in 1974.

Good example of the blind faith we place in checklists and price guides sometimes. There were a few Garvey items on the master Beckett checklist that I finally gave up on and assumed do not exist.

I also have a set of the 1973 Dean’s photo cards and it too is missing Davenport. My 73 Dean’s Winfield is currently at PSA. When it comes back I’ll be selling the set. When it comes to publications adding items that don’t exist, it also works the other way where you can’t find items catalogued that do exist.
I have these and can’t find anything about them anywhere. They are also on linen paper and are oversized. mrmopar has a Padres friend/contact that knows about them but they haven’t divulged the 411 yet. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Does anyone other than me wish the Padres would go back to these great looking uniforms? The latest are alright, but these are sharp (to me at least).

Those 1972 mustard yellow road uniforms were glorious.

Sorry about that. I meant to comment and got sidetracked. He didn't give me much more, but he did mention that there was some sort of "side" deal between the artist Bob Clark and Padres President Ballard Smith, who were friends. He could not recall, but thought that maybe they were offered in the Padre gift shop. it was not something official or run through the normal channels or approvals though and he noted that Smith never got involved in anything like it again.
When I asked about them, he did offer me a one of a kind original art piece, 20 x 32 of Bob Owchinco. If you had any interest, I could put him in touch with you. He was asking $350 + Shipping from So Cal. Quote:

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you know where I can find examples of those large Padre lithos, I'd really appreciate it!!!!! I have autographed examples of the Randy Jones and Gaylord Perry, but can't recall ever seeing the others. I'm from San Diego, and grew up there in the 1960s-1970s....I'm a Padres' Diehard!!!!! The Padres only wore that uniform style (with "San Diego" above "Padres") in 1978, and Gaylord was with the Padres only in 1978 & 1979.. He won the Cy Young Award with the Padres in 1978, along with getting his 3,000th strikeout that year. Then in 1979, he and the Padres had a falling out on his 40th birthday, and he walked out on the team. The line I remember is that he was upset that the Padres didn't give him a John Deere for his birthday, so he gave them his Dear John. I was actually at the game when he left the team. Interestingly though, Bill Almon is depicted in his artwork, wearing the 1974-1977 style jersey, as are Winfield and Owchinko (you can tell by the collars). Also, for the OP: I also, have a set of the 1973 Dean's Photos Padres, and it includes 30 photos, not including Davenport. Steve

Very cool, yes, same artist and looks to be same size or close to it. I wouldn’t be interested but thank you for talking to him and getting some intel for me.

Are yours around 20" x 32". That is pretty huge for a collectible set.
I imagined they weren't much larger than a magazine, maybe as wide, but a little taller. Based on the players shown, it looks like 1978-79 would be a good guess for year. I'm sure that could be narrowed done with all players and the years they were with SD. I believe Perry's first Padre Topps card was 1979, so that would seem to align with not being older than 1978 and Almon left the team after the 79 season. The ASG was in SD in 1978, so my guess would be that year.

Just saw this, no, mine aren’t quite that big. Mine are 10x16. 1978 is what I was figuring as well. Thanks for the info!
