I recently sold the attached Sam Rice plaque that I had purchased as part of a set from a mid sized auction house. The Buyer subsequently informed me that he was uncomfortable about the marker signature due to information in a book by Ron Keurajian. I'll take the card back, as I do not want anyone to be uncomfortable with something I sold them, but now I find myself unsure of whether to put the card back up for sale. Would any of the learned individuals on here be kind enough to offer an opinion on the authenticity of the signature? Thank you sam rice bw unsl.jpg

The thickness of the marker does it make tough to see all the points of interest, mostly I mean the c in rice. If it is a fake it is a pretty careful one (example the placement of the dot in the I). I wouldn't buy it because the marker really does kill the clarity in this case and I can't be 100 percent. Sorry I can't give a more definitive answer

I do not like it for several reasons. If you want some references for comparison go to PSA autograph facts for some exemplars of his signature. They have some good ones for him in this case. In this case this does not match any of my examples either.

Scott.. Thanks for your sample. I agree it has to be about the same time as the Artvue since Rice was not inducted until 1963 and shortly after his handwriting began to get shaky.
Your examples match my 3x5 and my 8x10 exactly. I also have a 33 Goudey signed but it is a vintage example. If the OP checked out Ron's book of which I have mixed feelings about he would have seen a few sentences directly addressing this exact style of forgery . Always like your posts. |

I agree. I haven't seen a Sam Rice signed in that style pen. They may be out there but I would pass on that one. This is the one in my collection. I was told it was signed later in Mr. Rice's life. If anybody has feedback, I'll gladly take it.

Matthew your plaque is spot on in my opinion. A great example of a later in life signature before it became real shaky.

Thank you gentlemen, I am taking the card back and will attempt to work out a return with the auction house. I'm not very confident on that being easy, but one never knows...
