I recently purchased a couple vintage cards with ball point ink on them and I was wondering what some other group members have done in the past for removing oddities from cards... I am talking wax residue, old tape, ink, ball point pen (black, blue, and red ink), pencil, creases...
I was talking to a guy at a local show and he was telling me about some pretty extravagant lengths to get creases out of cards. He would soak them through and use a press and he said the crease would diminish. I have not ever tried to do something like that for fear of really ruining a card. I thought it was a pretty interesting conversation, so I thought I would bring it here... Thanks for any comments... |

Contact Dick Towle, he might be on Net54. Google his name and contact information should be easily found. Best in the biz, and will be straight with you about removal of stains. I contacted him about ballpoint ink about two years ago, and he did not have the process perfected. Maybe now though. Search him out. Nice guy.

Thanks for letting me know. But this is not to improve my cards to turn around and sell. These cards are going to remain in my personal collection so I am not interested in spending a bunch of money, or more than the cards are really worth.
Thanks again! I did look at his site, but he made no mention of being able to remove ball point ink... Last edited by NateMack; 01-31-2014 at 07:06 PM. |

Welcome, Nate.
A few months ago, I inquired about removing pencil marks. http://net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=178808 At the time, the discussion had to do with an Eddie Collins T206 I was considering buying (I did not). However, since I have a '34 Goudey Earl Combs with some light pencil marks on the back, I'm considering giving it a go with the erasers discussed. I have the Pentel click eraser, as well as the Staedtler Mars plastic erasers (which I will more than likely use). I just need to get off my butt, and try it out.
