In 1974, when R.G. Laughlin produced this obscure set as an homage to the largely unknown and still unappreciated stars of the Negro Leagues, only four (Paige, Gibson, Leonard & Bell) of the 36 players featured had been enshrined in baseball's Hall of Fame. But Laughlin's choice of players was remarkably prescient -- over the next 32 years 18 more of these ballplayers received the call to Cooperstown. In all, 22 of the 36 cards in this set depict HOFers. It can be reasonably argued that for at least 9 of these stars, their '74 Laughlin card is their true RC since they had no other baseball cards produced of them before this set! (See Old Cardboard's HOF Rookie Cards page). Below are scans of all 22 Laughlin HOFers, listed by induction year and "Rookie Card" notation, if appropriate. Enjoy!
(To give credit where it's due: much of this info comes from Brian Hodes aka BKH, the proud owner of the #1 all-time and current-finest PSA registry set) Satchel Paige (HOF 1971) & Josh Gibson (HOF 1972) ![]() ![]() Buck Leonard (HOF 1972; Rookie Card) & Cool Papa Bell (HOF 1974) ![]() ![]() Judy Johnson (HOF 1975; Rookie Card) & Oscar Charleston (HOF 1976) ![]() ![]() Martin Dihigo (HOF 1977) & John Henry "Pop" Lloyd (HOF 1977) ![]() ![]() Ray Dandridge (HOF 1987) & Andrew "Rube" Foster (HOF 1996; Rookie Card) ![]() ![]() Bill Foster (HOF 1996) & Willie Wells (HOF 1997; Rookie Card) ![]() ![]() Wilbur "Bullet" Rogan (HOF 1998; Rookie Card) & "Smoky Joe" Williams (HOF 1999; Rookie Card) ![]() ![]() Frank Grant (HOF 2006; Rookie Card) & Pete Hill (HOF 2006) ![]() ![]() Biz Mackey (HOF 2006) & Jose "Joe" Mendez (HOF 2006) ![]() ![]() |

Agreed, great set. Even more scarce is the 1978 version, although not the same star power as 1974, still 3 HOF'ers: Leon Day, Hilton Smith & Sol White (rookie card).

True, those '78s are tough to find. Here's the Sol White (HOF 2006) RC:

I picked up the Josh Gibson recently. Its really a great set in terms of its content and design too.

In the mid eighties I had an opportunity to pick up uncut sheets of both issues. Not buying them was one of the earliest of my many mistakes in the hobby.

Those uncut sheets would have been cool, never seen any of those available. |

I kind of kick myself for not just picking up sets of these when I was a kid and they were a few bucks. I did manage to assemble a pretty nice lot a few years ago when the recession had prices way down:

I did buy a set or two when I was a kid, and really liked them. But then again, there wasn't much sports related that I didn't like, and collecting ADD had me in its grips! I was trying to make some kind of order out of a lifetime of collecting chaos the other day, and I found this nice Baseball Nostalgia catalog, along with a nice order form that I never used! What do you think, Adam, should we find Doc Brown's DeLorean and try to use the catalog to order a few?

Bumping this classic thread up. I just graded a raw set I bought last year on eBay. Got some really nice results including a PSA 9 Cool Papa Bell, which is a pop 1 none higher. This is such a fun set to collect and you can even find signed versions now and then.

One of each of the sets got very strong prices in REA for raw cards. The first set went for $2,160 and the second set went for $1,380. That's 72 cards for $3,540.

The last REA auction had 2 of the 1978 sets. One was graded and one wasn't. The ungraded set actually sold for more even though they both were high grade sets. That is strange since there's significant risk and cost associated with getting the ungraded set graded and hoping it ends up grading higher than the set that was already graded.

Optimism. Those raw cards are tens! Gotta be!

I've recently purchased some of both the 1974 and 1978 Laughlin Black Stars cards, 8 raw and 2 graded. In looking at them there does appear to be some inconsistency in the top to bottom/vertical sizing of the cards. The left to right/horizontal sizing does seem consistent with the cards I have.
While always a chance some of the cards are trimmed, is the sizing of these two sets known to have production (non-human altered) inconsistencies? |

That was my (3rd duplicate) graded '78 set in REA. I too was surprised that the raw one sold for more. C'est la vie.
On a brighter note, I landed a grail from fellow Net54 member Matt (1956toppsguy). This incredible card is now a centerpiece in my collection and I couldn't imagine another signed Satch I'd rather have. It's a Pop 2 with none higher, enjoy! paige74f_auto9_PSA7.jpg |
