I had a "find" recently at a local estate auction. It is an August 1911 Baseball Magazine. Very thick with incredible photos, articles and ads.
My question is this...can anyone help me identify the players on the cover? My gut instinct and hunch is that the player on the left is Nap Lajoie (confirmed by 2 Net54 folks). Cy Young in the front middle (confirmed by 2 Net54 folks) and I'm praying that one of the other guys is Shoeless Joe but of course I'm dreaming right? (we have 1 opinion that he may be in the back middle looking sideways.) We have another opinion that Ted Easterly may be the guy in the rear right corner. Thanks for your opinions and keep 'em coming! Mike ![]() 002.jpg Last edited by vthobby; 10-20-2011 at 11:21 PM. |

Middle guy is Cy Young. I think the guy right of Cy in the back that is looking straight ahead I think is Ted Easterly.

Jay, Greg, Phil, Howard and Jon,
Thank you for your responses! Its like opening a holiday present each time I see a response! Especially when 2 of the guys are Nap and Cy! ![]() So far, I have 1 vote as Shoeless Joe being the guy in the back middle. I was wondering if anyone thought he might be the guy in the front right? I am so bad at looking at photos and trying to then compare to paintings! The real frustrating thing is on the inside index, it just refers to the painter of the cover with no mention of who the guys are! Keep the opinions coming! Thanks again and I love this site already! mike ![]() Last edited by vthobby; 10-20-2011 at 11:07 PM. |

I have searched thru a bunch of articles and pictures of, on, or by Gerrit A Beneker. I have not been able to find anything about this particular painting. I have not given up though. Hopefully more to come.

My five second analysis (actually a little longer than that) on this drawing is this: First, this drawing is probably from an actual event (probably around opening day, when the players were paraded into stadiums around opening day), that being said, I don't see Joe Jackson as being in the front row for this drawing, as he has not yet tore up the league...that happens later in the season. Here is my assessment on who these guys are:
Immediate Left: I think we all KNOW this is Nap Lajoie Center: This one bothers me...as the only logical choice is Cy Young...but it's Cy from his "bad side" IF it's him. This guys is the only one fat cheeked enough to be Cy Young. I would say if this was from 1922...the guy in middle could be Jackson (after Jackson packed on the pounds)...but in 1911...Joe's face was not that fat....so logic says....it's Cy Young. Immediate Right: I believe this to be Ted Easterly. Player in background (Right) This could be George Stovall. Player in center (background): I believe this is Joe Jackson....hard to say for sure....but it has Jackson characteristics to it. That's my a little more than five second analysis on who the players are. I believe this is a Cy Young at the end of his career:

I feel like the painter felt like the guy on the far right is some way was worthy to be in the forefront of the picture with Nap and Cy. I believe he is the manager Deacon Mcguire.
