OT - Of interest to metalheads only (and Kingston Trio fans)

I found this today while cleaning my office.

It's from the legendary July 20 1984 show at the Mabuhay Gardens, in San Francisco.

It's 17 X 11 inches and was posted on the front door (until I took it).

Hey Doug, nice snag. My mother in law did the same thing on the campus of UC Berkeley in 1959. She had it ever since until she gave it to me to frame. I think the musical spectrum has now been covered between Metallica and the Trio...

The best part about the circle is that the first time I ever saw a band perform live was when I saw the Kingston Trio at Disneyland.

My parents didn't smoke cigarettes, but I loved watching Captain Kangaroo, and currently I have lots of things to do.

That is a very cool broadside...they were certainly an interesting group in that they were basically the first to make Folk Music hip...although they only rolled strong for about five years starting in the late 1950's...They had the raw talent but it was their manager Frank Werber who first saw it and groomed and molded their ability...even crafting stage banter into their act...

Many years ago I had the pleasure of helping them to their rooms at the hotel I work at...I really only recognized Nick Reynolds...the short one with the crew cut...but barely as he was bald and used a cane...As I recall they put on a concert in a tent on property and I was called to pick them up after they finished and get them to their room...I don't think hardly anyone my age knew who they were because they had long before then waned in popularity...even by the time I was in high school....but I knew who they were...But I'm one of the few my age that's been to a Four Freshman concert LOL...anyway I think I asked Reynolds where were their striped shirts in jest...they all just laughed if I recall...I remember helping Reynolds into his room and he had a little standard room...He didn't seem to care...and he was very upbeat...The last surviving original member Bob Shane just died January 26th 2020...over the thirty two years working that job I've seen some interesting things...

Here are a couple of different guest lists from the first Slayer show in London. June 24, 1985 at the original Marquee Club.

Extra credit to whoever can give the stage name of the member of a band who Slayer obviously looked up to musically who did not make it to the show that night.

I'll have to dig out my 1980s Priest tour program that I got Glenn and the rest of the band to sign...

Hint - the band name is written on the guest list...



The Cliff Burton era Metallica put lots of effort into living up to the well earned nickname "Alcoholica".

The first time I was at the Aragon was for the Venom / Slayer / Exodus show on April 5, 1985. Yesterday I talked to a buddy of mine who I met at that show.

Where did you get a Peace Sells guitar? That's a nice one.

Since we are talking about Megadeth, here are guitar picks from the first Megadeth show ever (Kerry King, Feb 17, 1984 at Ruthies Inn, Berkeley, CA) and the second show (Dave Mustaine, Feb 19, 1984 at the Stone in San Francisco).

My Helloween story is I attended a MTV Headbangers Ball show at the Aragon Ballroom, Chicago 1989. Anthrax, Exodus & Helloween. Helloween came on first and these 5 or 6 guys right in front of the stage, from the second they came out until they left the stage, gave the band the double bird salute. The ENTIRE set they stood there and flipped off the band. To this day I don't know why but it was one of the funniest, most uncomfortable things I have ever seen at a concert. I don't know what they did to piss these guys off but they certainly had no love for the band Helloween. Not one of my favorites, but far from the worse I ever saw. Will NEVER forget that as long as I live!
