Jeff - I agree. I also think part of the problem is that it is often assumed that questioning someone or something is attacking it, which causes divisiveness as people rush to defend either side (and in some cases, attack the questioner). Sometimes a question is just that.

The consignor of the felts was my Mentor. I don't know how long he has owned them but it has been a while. If I had known about them 10 years ago they would have been mine. However, back then, he was only selling off newer cards (1970 thru 1990's) and dupes of his T206's.

I lost touch with him around the year 2000 and just saw him again and talked to him for a few days a couple of months ago. Since 2002 he has been selling off his collection. Two things I know he sold that I wanted were his Large size Gypsy Queens that were trimmed and a group of about 20 Curtis Ireland Candy cards (including Cobb) that I found but could not afford. I told him about them and he bought them. He sold these items through Lew Lipset. At the time, Lipset said the Curtis Irelands were one of the largest groups to ever hit the hobby (sigh).

Here is the Large size Gypsy Queen he traded me back in the mid 1990's.

I was a 1st time bidder and winner on a few lots. This gentleman however, regardless of perceived professionalism and/or expertise, should do himself, his current, and his future customers a favor and include scans of the backs of all items. The fact that the two major pieces of the T227 set were not pictured cost the consignor plenty. The 10% buyer's premium is fair but still more than enough to put together a solid (and profitable) auction while including quality images of all aspects of the item up for bid.

Anyone who questions the integrity of the auction and a professional business in a public forum should study up on libel and slander law before putting something they cannot prove in writing.

Back in 1980 I attended an estate auction in New Jersey and one of the lots included an original sealed envelope mailed from Sporting Life magazine that said "Series 3" on it. When I examined the envelope it was obvious that it had never been tampered with. Won the lot and I couldn't even wait until I had pulled out of the driveway to open the envelope. Inside were 12 cards in near mint condition. And the cards were all different lengths. The shortest was at least 1/4 of an inch shorter than the longest. I'm sure that there are cards out there that are trimmed, but after that experience, I know for a fact that they were factory cut without much care given to uniformity.

I have several with Lew for many years and I have absolutely no doubts about his integrity (as well as the beadth of his knowledge).

BTW I won lot # 358: 2 PSA Graded T9 Turkey Reds of #55 James Jefferies and #76 Jack Johnson (PSA 4s) I'm shocked that I won it for $1,577 + BP.

I got shut out of everything last night - oh, well, that money will go somewhere else, real soon!

Anyway, I had won just a couple of small lots from Lew over the years, but then four or five years ago I hit several lots in an auction to the tune of about $12-15,000. I didn't talk to Lew after the auction, but waited and mailed a check as soon as I received the invoice. A big package unexpectedly showed up the next day - all my winnings. Lew had sent them out without even waiting for my payment, and he really didn't know me from Adam.

Lew obviously trusted me - and I've certainly never found any reason not to trust him!

I've been dealing with Lew since 1979 when he bought two 1933 Goudey Bengoughs from me at Penn State. Lew has real mellowed through the years and knows a helluva lot about cards. Now fun to deal with, I enjoy talking with him and consider him as honest as the day is long.

I picked up the Salutation Exhibit set (probably paid too much) but now I have a new set to play with.

Aaron M. That has to be the coolest program that I have ever seen! Wow!

With such an elaborate cover, I am surprised that you do not see more of them around. It was obviously an expensive programe to make at the time and assumably would have been made in large quantities. Any insight?
