M101-5/M101-4 article: call for information-- LAST appeal for info

thanks to all. Please keep 'em coming, and yes, info on blank backs is appreciated too.

If not too much of a hassle, please indicate which cards you have are graded, although we don't necessarily need to know the grades. When trying to assess populations, we don't want to double count cards reflected in pop reports along with those identified by collectors. Along those same lines, if you own a graded card that has been mislabled, or if you have had one corrected, please let us know. The grading companies were lax for a long time on labeling the cards with the various backs, instead lumping them all as m101-4s or m101-5s, which of course overstates the populations for the generic m101s and understates the particular backs. Population analysis is tough enough as it is, so any help we can get on "true" info would be appreciated.

Leon, you've got it wrong on back scarcity. Everybody's is actually the most common back--seems Everybody has one. So I'd be willing to send you an unopened box of '89 Donruss for yours, no, make that Topps (so you can enjoy the gum)

We are trying to complete the article draft in the next week or two, so if you have been meaning to post or send us any info on your holdings in the set, now is the time!

We are still very interested in hearing from anyone who has Fanous & Barr, Herpolsheimer, and Ware's Basement cards. In all cases we need to know platers names and numbers.

Ditto what Tim said. We appreciate all the info we have received, but it never hurts to have more.

We would suggest a slightly different order of scarcity than is relflected on the Old Cardboard website. Part of the problem or confusion that I have arises from the fact that many of these backs can be found on both m101-4 and m101-5, but with nowhere near the same frequency. For example, Famous and Barr is the most common back after blanks and The Sporting News, and if you just want a back example for type, you should have little difficulty finding one of these. However, an m101-4 with F&B back is not at all common, and less so than a Globe back, for example. Speaking of Globe and in response to James, I believe that Globe's scarcity position will remain at or about where it is now on the OC site--it is not one of the scarcer backs. Everything is relative though....and we look forward to telling you more about these sets soon.

Long before I paid much attention to the ACC, I thought the 1915/16 Standard Biscuit (D350-1) was simply a separate back of the M101-5. I believe it has the exact same checklist.

What is the common thinking in terms of its date of print cycle? Was it before the M101-5? After the M101-5 but before the M101-4? Why was it given a seaparate ACC number?

The D350-1 Standard Biscuit set does for the most part share the same checklist as the M101-5 set. D350-1 was just a number assigned to the bakery advertisement. Other advertisers from similar sets were given different numbers such as H810 for Globe Clothiers and D329 for Weil Baking. I believe the concensus is that all M101-5/4 related sets were produced in 1916.

Beals Becker was not found in any of the M101 affiliated sets aside from this Standard Biscuit back. Certainly, the Becker card is an intriguing card to throw into the mix for the article.

I believe I had read somewhere that the M101-5 were believed to be printed in March, 1916 and the M101-4 approximately June, 1916. Is this true? Is there any information on a print date of the Standard Biscuits?

Hi guys,

We definitely deal Becker and the other M101-5 anomalies (Bobby Wallace, #23 Cady) in the article. They appear on blank and Standard Biscuit backs only. We are pretty confident on a printing and distribution date for both sets (both 1916, but you'll have to wait for the article for all the details). Thanks for your interest--
