I can tell you this from reading some articles from newspaper archives. The Yankee owners did not like to see the Bam doing anything the put him at risk for injury.
May I stray off the theme of this thead a bit and show what Babe was not to do. Some of these "I Can'ts" were actually written into his contract and he could be fined if found to be in violation. A few more in his contract, no horseback riding, no skiing, no skating and no prolonged handshaking with the public. Believe it or not the owners thought prolonged handshaking put his big paws at risk, finger injury.
He was their big money maker at the ticket gate and they wanted him on the field at all times.
