Hunting for T206 ghost images with players on the BACK is no easy feat.
I felt very lucky to pick this example up ![]() Since there is hardly any information on known examples (2 Chances, 2 Weimers, 1 Starr, 1 Gilbert, 1 Cy Young, 1 Becker) I was wondering if anyone can help add to that number of known examples with ones they may have in their collection. Also any idea on how these images on the backs got there? I know you t206 ghostbusters like to keep to yourselves.. but any info on these cards is much appreciated.. Thanks Jamie "I aint fraid of no ghost" ![]() Last edited by Blunder19; 07-05-2011 at 05:33 PM. |

You did it!....sweet card ![]() ![]() My theory a sheet or two erronously printed first step negatively on backs, fronts were printed, then finished with the back ads....iggy and a few other might take a stab, but these are some of the more dramatic errors that weren't printers scrap and actually made it to packs, 150 series most affected due to the learning curve i assume ![]() ![]() ![]() here's my weimer , THanks Dan A.!! ![]() peace |

They're "offset transfers" With ink that isn't quite dry and enough pressure the wet ink on the front will transfer to the back whatever is on top of it.
I used to be pretty impressed with them, and they're still impressive, but I had a 100+ year old item printed in black on a similar cardstock to T206s transfer to another item while in the mail between the UK and US. I've learned a bit more about the formulation of inks back then, especially black. It's possible these and the Tolstoi transfers didn't happen during production. Are they all P150? if they are that would be pretty convincing that it was during production. Steve B |

Jamie, you've got to send that card to SGC and get it slabbed with the ghost on front like the Weimer!

The mirror image says offset transfer. If it's under the back printing then it's factory. The level of detail doesn't matter, as the original lithography is a transfer from plate to blanket to paper. A detailed offset transfer would usually be fresh ink, before any drying.
The level of detail is impressive. There's only a few ways for that to happen. Lots of weight on the stack of sheets right after printing of the black. The sheet gets caught and wraps around the blanket so it gets printed directly from the plate. A double feed where two sheets feed at once while the next color is being printed. The last one is very unlikely as it would mean they were rushing to print the next step and didn't allow drying time. Poor practice, and since black is printed last it would have had to have happened while the backs were being printed. And for a real long shot- One I'd have a hard time believing for a number of technical reasons - If they were printed from stones, it's possible to pull a proof directly from the stone. Which would be mirror image, but should also be on the coated side of the stock. And in general only one sheet would be done and in a different part of the plant. I'd have a hard time believing that a proof pulled from the stone in either the department that prepared the stones or a proofing department would end up in production. I'd Love to see a big high res scan of one. Very cool cards either way, and if all P150 they might answer some questions about the makeup of the sheets. Steve B |

It is faint (let's say "spookier"), but there is a weak cylindrical transfer ghost on Bradley too.
