I'm sure you've considered this already, but why wouldn't you think that all the factory 42's started out dark blue, and some have just faded more than others over the years? It might be nice to take the light blue backs you have and see if the ink on the front of those cards may also be lighter than expected. Correlation between light ink on front and back may help you figure the mystery out as well.
