I used to think that when Grace Slick sang "logic and proportion" on White Rabbit, she was saying "logic and good fortune." I think it's easy to screw up lyrics.

CCR's "There's a bathroom on the right" comes to mind.

IN 1979-80 I saw Jefferson Airplane and Introducing Grace Slick. The show was in the Greek Theater in Hollywood, in the side of a mountain. That might be the best concert I ever saw...or maybe it was because their songs had nothing on where my head was at that night ....

Most of my picks are made with repeated watchability/listenability in mind, and with an emphasis on entertainment value over artistic merit:

Contact
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Armageddon
The Natural
Secondhand Lions

Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street
Beatles - Abbey Road
Steppenwolf - Steppenwolf Live
Neil Young - After the Gold Rush
Ron Wood - I've Got My Own Album To Do

Movies (that I could watch over and over):
Footlight Parade
Casablanca
The Best Years of our Lives
The Last Picture Show
A River Runs Through It

CDs (that I never get tired of):
Bix Beiderbecke - Bix & Tram
Django Reinhardt - Anthology
Love - Forever Changes
Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks - Original Recordings
Gabby Pahinui - Best of the Gabby Band

Tried to embed a YouTube video into this post but can't get it to work. Never had a problem before. Anybody else having trouble with that?

Jason- Mingus Ah Um is a terrific album. Trivia question: the song Goodbye Pork Pie Hat is a tribute to what musician?

David- I remember walking around high school carrying a copy of Love's Forever Changes and thinking I was really cool for doing so. One of the really great albums that is long forgotten.

Lester Young.

Mingus is one of my top 5 favorite bassists (I play, as well.) I highly recommend his biography, "Charles Mingus: Myself When I Am Real."

That would be correct.

The only bio of Mingus I read was Beneath the Underdog, which I know is grossly inaccurate (although entertaining). My wife and I own a home in eastern Long Island, and our neighbor a few doors down is Sue Graham Mingus. But we never saw her, she is kind of reclusive. Now we rent the house so we are hardly ever there.

If Lyle saw me carrying that album he would have punched me out. He was one scary dude.

Now that I think of it, he graduated in 1967 so by the time Forever Changes came out he was already gone...and not missed!

Default I don't consider any kind of Greatest Hits/Essential recordings an Album/CD

That Said... my top five

Abbey Road
Sgt Peppers
Thick as a Brick
Who's Next
After the Gold Rush

And a bonus for best live album/CD would be "Four Way Street" by CSN&Y.

Now for the movies...

North by Northwest
The Godfather
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Forrest Gump
A Bronx Tale

And a bonus for the best sports movie would be "Field of Dreams"
