Paul, I bowed out with a $1200 bid. I figured the Gomez, O'Doul and the other cards (quite a few big PCL names in there) had a rough "value" of $650-700 together and just couldn't justify more than $500-600 for a Southworth with a chunk out of one of the corners. I too was hoping it wasn't noticed by the masses but those days seem to be long gone now. Fairly crazy price price if you ask me, but nobody did.
Instead I turned my bidding and won the lot of 130 1922 Zeenuts in the Clean Sweep auction last night--I saw the cards at the National and there were quite a few Seattle guys I needed in that lot. I will be having quite a few dupe 1922's after I get the lot though--which is always good for trade-bait. -Rhett

I would find it hard to believe that you could make money on the Southworth card at the $3,000 + vig price tag for the lot. The Lazzeri and Southworth lots were open for hours passed the start of the extended bidding.

I am relatively new to zeenuts...but a southworth collector. I didn't know if it was the Southworth or other HOF'ers that caused the tremendous run up in prices. Sorry to see it go so high

Agree with Cat, at those prices, the cards were not purchased for investment or to flip but instead to fill a major hole(s) in someone's collection. When was the last time you saw a Zeenut Southworth or 22 Lazzeri for sale/auction?
Edited to add: My '29 Zeenuts Ernie Lombardi has been sitting over in the B/S/T for three days at a measely asking price of $350.00 without even one inquiry. Where are the big spenders when you need them? Last edited by bcbgcbrcb; 10-01-2009 at 02:01 PM. |

Imagine what kind of thread this would turn into if the hammer prices had been reversed
