I had a handwritten letter from Jack Glasscock. While obviously not an idiot, he admitted that he wasn't educated and that he left home as a teenager to be a ball player. His grammar and punctuation were so bad he put periods in the middle of sentences! I would expect that Glasscock's writing skills were near the extreme, but most of the 1800s players' educations and blue collar backgrounds were similar to his.
