Anthony- I appreciate the Duke, he's a cult figure. Have you ever eaten at Duke's in Santa Monica? Good food, terrific view. |

My only "pre-war" Sportkings. I have a bunch of post-war starting with Truman, but these are the only two that I can justify posting here. |

It is interesting to me that Duke is listed as a swimmer. Though, he was quite the accomplished swimmer and is in the swimming HOF, I think he is far better known for his surfing. |

Except that back then surfing was pretty unknown (Duke brought it to the mainland and to Australia around this time) so had he been just a surfer he never would've been known outside Castles. |

As long as this worthwhile thread has already come a bit off the rails I invite you to look at a few of my items that pertain to Hawaii's beloved hero, Duke Kahanamoku. http://tinyurl.com/9j87cy |

Always been fascinated by this set and some of the athletes depicted. It would be cool to hear a little more of the background of some of the non-baseball players. What elevated them to the status of sport kings. |

Duke Kahanamoku was Sheriff of Honolulu from 1932 to 1961. It is said that he never made a single arrest. Also acted in numerous movies. Competed against his brother Sam in '24 Olympics (100 meter freestyle, Weismuller gold, Duke silver, Sam bronze). |
