I find the (multiple) threads on politics on this board absolutely enraging -- like the worst trolls hit the board and won't let go until after election day.

I come here for pre-war baseball card information, not to hear why people think Obama or McCain are or aren't good for the country.

While I think "how will the economy affect the vintage baseball card hobby" is fair game, beyond that I would like to see people show more restraint in sharing their so-called values. It only breeds discontent and divisiveness.

Can I get a moratorium on politics? Or am I doomed to the typical response: "Hey, if you don't want to talk politics, you don't have to read the thread."

I concur there fellow collector! I am sick of watching The TV and hear Brainwashing. If I wanted that i would move to russia in the 80s of course. ok so How will the market of collecting fair if the dollar collapses? That is a question i can adhere to.

Let me remind you that on the long thread over the weekend that you jumped in on the 4th post and said something about President Obama--if you don't want politics discussed on the board you should not bring it up as Obama is anathema to conservatives and many can't help responding.

Jim- fair point, but I have had a change of heart. And you know what brought it about? Reading all 400 posts on this thread.

After seeing everybody blast everyone on the other side, it occurred to me that something is wrong. Strangely, this board is a microcosm of the larger world around us. And nothing can get accomplished with everyone at each other's throats.

So I am taking a more moderate position on all issues, and straddling that little white line. I think either extreme is bad- yes, that includes the extreme left (never thought you would hear that from me).

I would move closer to the center if we agreed up front that lower taxes, reduced government spending, balanced budgets, a strong military and the end of abortion on demand were givens.

I am reminded of what Alexis De Tocqueville wrote in his book Democracy in America:
"It is difficult to say what place is taken
up in the life of an inhabitant of the United States
by his concern for politics. To take a hand in the
regulation of society and to discuss it is his biggest
concern,and so to speak,the only pleasure an American knows."

Guys, the idea here was to agree to stop bringing politics to this card chat; if you're in, say so, if not, say so. Either way, STF up on this thread about your politics and go back to bashing each other on the myriad threads now devoted to that. As for me, I'm in on the moratorium.

Paul - I couldn't agree with you more. Bruce started a very good & relevant discussion, but it somehow turned to political stuff. If you look early in that thread, I wanted the discussion to get back talking about cards. I'm really suprised Leon didn't lock the thread a lot sooner.

it'd be too crowded and boring. Sadly, the 10-20% on either end of the extreme can't really see ANY value to the concerns of the other side and muck it up for everyone else. Life is not black & white.............just like the backdrop on this site.......it's pretty gray.......(or grey if you prefer)

and you will see that it calls for a moratorium on politics and political discussions in general, except as they might touch on the card market. And even then I would hope that the talk could stay on the economic side of things. I'm a newcomer to this board. I've been collecting most of my life, and have been a serious collector for over 20 years. I know some of you by reputation, and more by having read the board closely. I respect your wisdom in the field of card collection and sports history. But I don't give a damn about your political opinions because they're not worth anything, and because wading through them to see if the subject of the thread is ever picked up again is a waste of my time.

PLEASE guys, if you want to argue politics, set up a little board somewhere else, preferably far away, and go at it. Otherwise, in the words of the great philosopher Tom Lehrer "If a person can't communicate, the very least he can do is to SHUT UP."

Like a number of other collectors we are sick and tired of the
the futile attempts at political commentary on this Board

Whilst we are responsible for starting many of the longest running
threads on the Board, our intent is, and always has been to generate
an interesting discussion about a relevant and important baseball hobby topic

Clearly the economic climate will impact the card market- regardless of
who is President or whether Barney Frank or Newt Gingrich runs the
House Banking committee.

We are each entitled to our views. However, we believe that a number of
people (left and right) believe that their distinguished collections entitle
them to present bad impersonations of one of the single most dangerous persons to ever
disgrace the American TV screen- Keith Olbermann.

Keith may be left of Fidel Castro, but he does own some important cards.
At least he has the good sense not to participate in the political discussions
on this Board.

Let's make a new rule- No off topic discussions. No references to politics No jokes
about tv shows or references to girl friends- baseball only- in that way we can learn
and talk to one another rather than talk at one another

I like your style--calling for an end to political discussions in the first part of the post and calling Keith O "the single most dangerous person to ever disgrace the American TV screen" later on. I agree with both sentiments.

I also will give you a pat on the back for your consistent flow of interesting topics--to quote you and I agree "we are responsible for starting some of the longest running threads on the board".

I personally believe there should be much more political "discussion" about how leftbama the socialist wants terrorists to abort our children. if he's elected it will corrupt our morals, leading to socialism and the suppression of card collecting! if leftbama is elected he will tax hard-working families 20% of their income making it impossible to collect cards!

seriously. it's amazing how suddenly a couple weeks before the election two or three people start posting more than usual, injecting blatant hyper-political commentary into every one of their messages like it's appropriate and natural for this forum, trying to create the appearance of a consensus for their candidate. it says a lot about your worldview if you think everyone is that dumb.

I have one question before I lock this thread too. Why on earth would you start a thread with this title and say you want a moratorium on political threads (which I not only agree with but will make happen). Actually, my first question was rhetorical as I am locking this one. Now, I expect you, David, Ted and the rest of the guys that are arguing to start a good vintage card thread, ok? I think it is ALL of AMERICAS fault for the economic issues we have. It truly encompasses all political boundaries and we all NEED to work together to fix it. best regards
