This is a common OJ. In fact, rather common. The glue mark on the back makes it looked like it was rebacked to me as well. It has stains and wavy borders but a nice image. The high book on the card is $600. He has it listed with a BIN of $699. Granted, a nice image but possibly rebacked with the staining and wavy borders. I offered 10% of his price. Yes, $69. It might have been a little snide on my part but I offered my explanations. He counter-offered with a $698 and told me he has had offers over $500. I re-offered $79 and told him if he could get $500 for the card to jump at that price but doubted that he could for this particular OJ. He then emails and tells me that I am blocked from all future auctions and to not contact him again.

...fine by me.

So, was I in the wrong this time? In the past few months I have purchased several OJs in similar conditions that were rebacked for between $50 and $75. I honestly thought my offer was fair and he was just fishing for bids.

I hope he does sell it for that much...I have several OJ Clements including a few tougher pose and script variations in the same condition as his and I could always use the extra money.

seems like it would have been easier not to make a deliberate offer you know the seller thinks is lowball to begin with. id be a little miffed too

I think the seller thought you where a potential pain in the a$$ customer so blocked you in order not to have to deal with you.

Yes he is fishing for a sucker and you where not going to bite.

I think anytime you offer 10% of a list price your wasting your time and the seller's. After the first time he didn't accept your offer maybe it would have been best to just move on, instead of going up another $10. But as you said...fine by you, plenty of other sellers on ebay.

Jeff is correct...there have been times where a seller listed a card for nearly $400 and it was worth maybe $20. I offered my $25 bid and was accepted. You never know. I do like to think that I know a few things about OJ Phillies and it seemed with a price over book he was fishing and that I may be able to convince him to sell it to me. I have less of a problem with a seller just saying no thank you (which is what I do when I get a super low offer). Speaking of that...I have sold cards for far less (75-85%) than my original BIN price as well...once after a buyer told me I had a card mis-identified and once when the card was deemed to be worth far less than what I had thought (my mistake for not looking it up and going my memory).

I'm on the non-sport forum and we had a thread on this very seller almost a year ago. Generally speaking the non-sport cards listed are about 10x actual value. I have a pretty good handle on values and sold some Tip Top Dick Tracy cards in vg for about 30-35 bucks each. This seller has them at 299.00 and 337.00 each. Check out the link below, this card is worth 150.00. If this seller lives another 100 years he/she will be long gone before realizing these prices. Seller should get out of the card business and look for new ways to make money, like cock fighting.

Most times when I see an item I want with a high BIN I will check the seller's completed listings and see what kind of "play" there seems to be. He has every right to fish for a sucker if he wants and I have every right not to be one. If I determine that there is no "play" on his end and he is running an ebay museum I move on. If he has demonstrated that he can be reasonable, I will make an offer. I usually can get a "Best Offer" card @ 60-75% of the price sometimes less. IMO, your second offer was unreasonable based upon his response to the first one.

That OJ has a pretty nice image. You never really know how a seller will react when presented with a low offer. Some just ignore it and reject the offer or others just let the offer expire. After getting a counter for a few bucks lower than the BIN I would have just dropped it or asked what the best price was. You're right though, if someone offered me $500 for that card I'd have sold it pretty quickly. Either the guy has no clue or he just made up the offer. People on ebay should just chill out a little and not take offense at everything. On the flip side after the first counter offer I'd just have looked for something else because the guy just wasn't interested in selling the card.

I've heard eBay sellers who say they block people who make ridiculously low offers, and sometimes comment they don't understand the purpose of making an offer the bidder himself probably knows is ridiculously low. The bidder knows the offer will be rejected, the seller rejects it, what was the point in that exchange?

I have made offers on listings when the BIN was outrageous. I submit what I consider to be a fair offer and wait to see if I receive a counter. If I simply get rejected I will send the seller an email and ask what they are looking to get for the card. It that number is far from what I am willing to pay I thank them for their response and let it go.

If they give me a counter or a number that is some what reasonable I may explain to them why I feel the card is only worth a certain amount and let the conversation then take its course.

Making a low offer compared to the BIN and then berating the seller after being rejected or ignored is a waste of both parties time.

If a man wants to fish, let him fish. Who am I to begrude him the chance to catch a big one?

My example of a ridiculously low offer is if the item is a genuine authentic and clean Babe Ruth signed baseball, and the offer is $20. The offer is so ridiculous, it would be fair for the seller wonder if it's a prank.

Somewhat unrelated, but I remember a kid via email telling me he had what would be the most valuable card ever. After a couple more verbose emails saying how it would be more expensive and desired than a T206 Honus Wagner, he emailed me a ten minute download pic the card (dial up back then). And the card was .... a 1987 Topps Mark McGwire in perhaps Ex condition. I thought, Please don't bug me again kid.

I don't think it is rebacked, but could be wrong. Anyway if I could buy OJ cards in this condition for what you offered I would buy all day. Even if I was the seller and was insulted at the lowball offer I would not block you as a bidder. It would take more than that for me to block a bidder. Such as returns for no reason, no payment, etc.
