I was wondering if this trio completed the first ever recorded double play in baseball or was it just that the poem was written about the double play that made it famous? |

most definitely not the first. it's just a pretty awful poem that somehow took off during the cubs and giants rivalry in the first decade of the 20th century. |

...began playing Major League Baseball in 1902. Of course there were two outs recorded on one play, or a double play, well in advance of that date. |

i didnt think it was the first double play ever but maybe by chance the first recorded...i just happen to be looking up the first unassisted triple play and that was easier to find... apparently, its a pretty rare feat but if i remember correctly, they were all either short-stops or 2nd basemen. |

An outfielder did it in the PCL, years ago... I'll post the info and a scan of one of his cards, if someone posts his name. |
