I was wondering if this trio completed the first ever recorded double play in baseball or was it just that the poem was written about the double play that made it famous?

if not the first recorded double play, was there one and by who?

most definitely not the first. it's just a pretty awful poem that somehow took off during the cubs and giants rivalry in the first decade of the 20th century.

Your follow-up question is harder to answer. The first double play may very well have taken place in the first ever baseball game. But trying to determine the exact date of that is a chicken/egg game.

What a GREAT poem !!!!!

I find myself mumbling it to myself quite often. It made them immortal and got Tinker into the HOF (but that's another thread).

If nothing else, it makes people look up the word "gonfalon."

Funny, in a way, usually (historically and statistically), the team with the highest amount of double plays is usually the worst team (more opposing batters reaching first).


........... and, as far as "chicken/egg" OT: I always thought it was based on Evolution (egg) vs. Creationism (chicken), but that's just me .......

i didnt think it was the first double play ever but maybe by chance the first recorded...i just happen to be looking up the first unassisted triple play and that was easier to find... apparently, its a pretty rare feat but if i remember correctly, they were all either short-stops or 2nd basemen.

i'm correcting myself, there were a couple of first basemen that did it as well.

the first mentioned triple play was by an outfielder but that play was being disputed since the rules have changed since then. center or left fielder caught a line drive and the runner on 2nd and 3rd attempted to score, the outfielder stepped on 3rd and got both guys out (since both past 3rd base) then threw it to 2nd to make sure of the out.

i heard this years ago but just read it about it last week, i didnt have all the details so i'm hoping the internet is correct

Rosy Carlisle, 1911 Vernon Tigers....If need be, I can probably track down the date for you, but still waiting for the first cup of coffee to kick in this morning...


And he's correct!!!

Carlisle caught a line drive, diving and rolling as he caught it. The bases were loaded. He got up and ran to second, forcing that runner, then ran to first, forcing that one. Unassisted, even by today's rules.

Here's Carlisle's Zee-Nut card, and under that is a newpaper drawing about it all. This is from a really neat book, The Story of Minor League Baseball, a 1953 book, over 700 pages, and well indexed.
