I know someone out there can explain this to me. I just sent 20 card to SCG as crossovers from PSA. While I have not recieved the cards yet, I can now view the grades and two of the cards did not get graded due to a code of "G" which means did not meet minimum grade. Both were originally PSA 4's, does this mean SGC would have given them both a lower grade so they did not issue a grade. All of the others graded out fine but I was curious about these two. Any help would be appreciated.

Doug - unless you tell them otherwise, SGC only crosses at or above the current grade.

What happens when you crossover a PSA card to SGC that has a qualifier? For example, a PSA6 (MK) would automatically be dropped down (to a SGC40 or so?)...do you need to tell SGC to crossover with a specific lower grade, or do they automatically know that the card will be lower because of the qualifier and adjust accordingly? I have a few that I would like in SGC holders, even if they are in lower condition. Thanks.

Jimmy - in my experience, SGC ignores the qualifier - that is to say that if it's a PSA 4 (OC), unless you tell SGC otherwise, they will only cross if it will make it into an SGC 50 or higher.

Again, you can instruct them to cross at any grade, or provide a minimum if you so desire; this is just if nothing is specified.

...and specify "no minimum grade." What you can't do is send it in a PSA 5 holder and say, "Minimum Grade 6" -- that is, you can specify a lower floor than the current grade; you just can't specify a higher floor.

That's my experience as well. And with Obaks that have a number stamped on the back they will not downgrade it just because of the stamp.

It is important to clearly set forth what you are willing to accept as a cross-over grade because if you don't and they don't think it will cross-over at the same or better grade they'll just return the card to you in the original holder.

I just read on their site under the Crossover section:

SGC will no longer accept cards for crossover valued in excess of $500.

So to Crossover a higher valued card would I have to crack it and submit it for grading raw? What is their reason for the $500 cap?

Hi, Glad to see so many interested in SGC crossovers. Like most of the people have stated you need to specify a minimum grade you will except on the card. If not we only cross over for same or better. If the card has a qualifier we only cross at the same number on the holder or better, so it is best to state the lowest grade you will except. Also we now will except crossovers even if you request a higher grade. We will accept crossovers valued above $500 you just need to pay the appropriate tier price for the value of your card.

This might sound silly but if you could care less what a card grades and you just want them in an SGC holder. Can you ship them in their PSA holders and just have no minimum grade?

Reason I ask is that I have some post 51 hockey cards in PSA holders that I simply want in SGC holders and don't really care what they grade as relative to their PSA grade. I want to take advantage of the 5$ special for hockey cards this month but don't want to be arsed to pop these out of the psa holders and put them in regular holders. Does that make any sense?

That will certainly work - you need to specify that you have no minimum grade though; otherwise they will use the current grade as the minimum.

Its funny that these same questions seem to get asked over and over. I cross every card I buy to sgc (assuming its not already graded by them) and thus have a lot of experience with their crossover service. So its all in one place:

1. If you dont specify, SGC will only cross to an equivalent grade. Thus, if you have a psa 4, it will only cross if it meets the qualifications for a 50. If you have a 4.5, it will only cross if it meets the qualifications for a 60 since there is no SGC equivalent to a 4.5.

2. If you dont care about the grade, you can send in your cards slabbed with "no minimum" written in the section for comments (or for that matter anywhere on the submission form that it will be seen) and the card will be crossed assuming its authentic and unaltered. If the card is potentially altered and you want it slabbed regardless, you must specify that you want it to be graded authentic if it is deemed to be trimmed, etc.

3. If you care about the grade but you are nevertheless willing to accept a lower grade (for example, if you have a 4.5 and are willing to accept the half point downgrade to a 50) you need to state the minimum grade you are willing to accept (i.e. "do not cross if lower than a 50").

4. If the card is valued at greater than $500, you can still send it in slabbed - you just have to pay the fee for the normal grading tier as if it were not sent in raw. For example, if the card is worth between 1 and 2.5k, you have to pay the $20 fee for the Grand Slam service level (5 business day turnaround) or for a higher service level (with shorter a shorter turnaround) in place of the $7 crossover fee.

5. You do not have to crack the card out to get a better grade. I have received upgrades on several occasions despite the card being sent in the slab.

6. SGC does not ignore qualifiers when determining grades. They simply evaluate the card based on their own criteria. Therefore, if PSA deems the card OC and SGC doesn't deem the centering to severe to knock it down it will receive the same grade. However, I can assure you that if a card is high grade but has writing on the back getting a MK from PSA, SGC will knock it down to a 30 in most instances. There are certain overstamps that SGC does not penalize - such as "toy town" stamps. Therefore, in most instances, a card with a qualifier will not cross unless you specify a lower grade that you would accept (because, as stated by Glynn, SGC does ignore the qualifier for purposes of determining what an equivalent grade is for purposes of crossing cards over to SGC).

Josh - SGC should copy most of this and put it in their FAQ; it's clear and well written.

SGC does ignore the qualifier on the slab when looking at a cross-over. They, of course, do not ignore the defect on the card that caused the qualifier.

As for the comment above, I think we are essentially saying the same thing. SGC will simply evaluate the card and the defect. So, if a card is graded a PSA 8(MK) and sent in for crossover without any instruction, SGC will only cross it if it would receive an 88 under their grading scale, mark and all. Lets assume, however that the MK is due to someone writing their name on the reverse in ink (in reality, I have no idea if an otherwise near-mint/mint card could actually have that much writing and only receive an MK qualifier but that is not important for my example), I am fairly certain that the card would likely grade no better than a 30 under SGC's standards. Therefore, if you wanted the card to cross regardless of grade, you would need to specify a "minimum grade 30" in your instructions or its likely to come back in the original psa 8(MK) slab.

Thanks for the good info! I got my crossovers back this afternoon and was quite happy, four cards got bumped up a grade, two PSa 4's they did not grade due to my not specifying a minumum. Not a problem, though I was most interested in getting my cards in SGC holders, the bump in grade was a bonus as far as I am concerned. I have another 20 or so cards plus the two that went ungraded, that I'll soon be sending in for crossovers. Many thanks to all for their opinions and expertise!

It's nice to know SGC doesn't deduct for the blue stamp on the back of the Obaks because 3 years ago when I sent in the entire 150 series from 1910, they did just that. Two sides to the coin, glad to know SGC now recognizes that the blue stamps are prevalent and should not lower the grade, but on the flip side, I just can't see paying to have my whole set re-graded even though I know many of the cards would automatically shoot upward in grade. The cards look nice in the black holders so even if they are 30s and 40s instead of 50s and 60s, I'll keep them the way they are now.
I believe PSA still gives a qualifier for the blue stamps on the back but doesn't lower the numerical grade. I haven't submitted anything to PSA in quite a while so I am going by what I see on ebay...

Not to hijack the thread or to bash but,,,

Whats up with getting no reply when you send an Email. Ive been trying to get a hold of Steve who took my submission in Chicago which involved a crossover. I keep getting the message (This is a warning message only. Your message remains in the server queue, the server will try to send it again. You should not try to resend your message now.)
Followed in a couple days by undeliverable...

Does this just mean that he cant keep up answering emails???

I tried to Crossover a GAI 3 Cobb card I bought from Barry awhile back to an SGC holder. The crossover grade was not important and I thought STeve H understood this... I gave him several other purchases also while I was there.. Steve said after inspection of the card that all was fine and that the grade should crossover fine.. He filled out the sheet, made some scribbly notes, charged me a couple bones, and everything was good.. My card came back a "code G"...

All I wanted was the damn thing in an SGC holder..
Im kinda old school and I like dealing face to face with people thats why I drove to Chicago.. I hate using the mail to send cards to be graded. In fact, Im not much of a fan of graded cards in the first place.. But I do love the SGC holders and the way they make a PreWar card look..
