Those interviews are funny. It seems to me that one of the features of living in a relatively free and prosperous society is that many of us are free to focus on some very narrow and trivial things. It's an unfortunate possibility. At the same time, I wouldn't be surprised if the interviewer sometimes stumbled across Americans who could answer any question that he threw at them. Are Canadians more worldly? It's hard to generalize: having spent 6 years in Toronto, it seems to me that the average Torontonian knows neither more nor less about world affairs than does the average Bostonian or New Yorker. But Canadians do know infinitely more about our culture, economy, history, politics, etc. than we do about theirs. That is because they find it somehow interesting. |
