Chip Reese just passed away at age 56
A cash game specialist who seldom played tournaments
as cash games are far more lucrative
he won well over $100+ million $$ playing cards,
He was a true superstar, not like most alleged superstars in most sports these days

I guess he took one more bad beat than any man could stand.... Yesterday I flopped the nut str8 with my sooooted slick and had a str8 flush redraw. Turn rag gave me the nut flush and river PAIRED the turn card. I lost to running quads (1223 or so to 1 against) where with 3 cards flopping in the "zone" my oponent called a stiff bet pre-f and an allin on the flop with small pockets.... Poker can break anyone's spirit. In any event - I watched him play a few heads-up matches and a final table.... He was said to be among the best. As I am nearly his age it reminds me I should get out more. RIP....

sitting 518 with 514 being in the money.
Short stack though I won't be blinded out before I cash.
Dealt KK. Go all in.
Guy calls Q9 non suited.
Flop 9AA
Turn 6
And I'm sure you can guess the river

I'm really shocked at Chip's untimely death. He was so laid back unlike some of the more frenetic players.

they can only tell me another bad beat story if they've compared it to whatever they think is their best bad beat story and the new one tops it. Having been a card player for more than 46 years (and you STILL play so badly Henry?) when a hand is over it's over. End of story. Paying 500+ places? 4500+ entrants - you musta been online? I played over 15,000 tournaments online over 7 years. I dind't really make any good money but didn't lose any either. Playing poker is fun but OH so frustrating. The degree of success for the player bringing countless skills to the table over a donkey is never in proportion. The luck factor in NL is is even more stilted. That's why I like limit. In limit the bad player must continue to beat you. Sorry for the transgression - especially on a thread relating to a loss - but it IS a bit OT and not posted by a relative. Maybe my bad but you can see it didn't stop me from posting when I could have just deleted it.... Just gearing up for my day at the tables tomorrow as I don't play online anymore. 100.00 max buy-in for the 2/5 NL game. Florida poker sucks...........

In Florida they have a maximum game 5/10 nl with 100 buyin. Talk about showdown... 30$ to see the flop and whatever the big stack has to chase with or a 95. bet from any # people looking for an immediate double-up to make a stack..... There's an expression as well "to be a Florida Player" - bet with wild abandon and don't even look at your cards until the river "-)

we could get together for a pre-war 10/20 or 20/40 limit hold 'em game or sumptin...... I know JC is a playah (saw him at the Trump and it seems that many here may be.... Just think no rake and a bunch of chasers like myself! I think it was Cleveland at one National where they had a phone # to hook you up with the local game. I found out at the end of the show so it was too late - but that's all I would have needed - some home game in a farmhouse with strangers and far from home. Too funny. I still have it somewhere. I know nothing of who Chip was as a person. Your job is only what you do and not who you are. While poker still gets a bad name (sometimes deservedly) - if you're good at it and in control - I think it's similar to being good at any endeavor - respect is due....

Sometimes it's simply not about poker when details become available.

Poker legend David "Chip" Reese, a renowned cash-game player and the owner of three World Series of Poker bracelets, died Tuesday. He was 56.

Eric Drache, a close friend of the family, said Reese called his doctor at 10 p.m. on Monday complaining of pneumonia symptoms but never went to a hospital and died in his sleep.

One thing that will happen is that we have to get a National Convention poker game in 2008. The Official "VBC Forum Poker Game". Stay Tuned....

When Chip was young, he played poker to buy baseball cards. Not sure if they were for vintage cards, Leon. =)

A proficient cash/mixed-game specialist, Chip possessed integrity and was well respected among the community. The amazing thing about Chip is that he essentially played against anyone, not caring if the game was short-handed or HU.

Personally, I have never played against him - but those that I know, mention how he was a class act.

Do you know what REAL poker would be?? Playing for your cards.

When I was a kid in the late 1970's and early 1980's, I used to play poker for baseball cards. Two or three of my friends and I would get together and play poker for cards we didn't want. The Rangers, Cubs, White Sox and Mets were HEAVILY weighted in the mix because mos of their players sucked.

One time, one of my friends got into his older Brother's ball cards and brought them. So instead of playing for cards from the late 1970's and early 1980's, he was putting in cards from the late 1960's and early 1970's. No stars mind you, at least he didn't think so. Why I sya that is because one of my friends got a 1968 Nolan Ryan Rookie card out of a game and as far as I know, still owns it today, even though he stopped collecting years ago.

So, back on topic. REAL poker would be you guys getting together and bringing your collections and putting them on the line. You think a "bad beat" would be losing money, how about if you were losing your cards??

Talk about bad beats...4 left out of 2400 in an 11.00 tourny..I'm in 2nd place and get dealt AA..first guy..12k..next 36K (chip leader)..me all in...the small stack and the chip leader both called..guess what? They both had pocket 8's...flop..j 10 4...turn 9...river 7..I'm out. I got 4th for 1425.00 but was in total shock..First place got 4K..ouch! Not saying I would have won it but geez...

Very sad to hear about Mr Reese. I'll be 52 in January and couldn't believe the news...
