I am curious to how many of the readers ever look beyond the first page of threads. I know that I rarely will check anything beyond page 1 unless I know what I am looking for.

I typically check the board several times throughout the day. I may not read each thread individually, however I generally won't miss one of interest before it falls to page 2. For everything else, I try to make decent use of the search feature if I'm looking for specific subject matter.

Rarely look past page 1 here. This is a good question Lee, gives me a chance to be the bitch a little...

I get a bit cranky when the "recent pickups" thread doesn't approach the 50 post mark and is prematurely retired. Please consider this, If you must be the top post, take a breath or two, and wait 'til the current thread has run - it would be a nice gesture.

Steve - maybe I'm wrong, but my understanding of the pickups thread is that each person posts once per thread - so if you have 1 pickup on Nov 1st, that would go in the 1st Nov. pickup thread and then if you have a second pickup on Nov 3rd, you wait until the second pickup thread to post. What that means is if you only make your first pickup of the month on Nov 15th, you can still post it in the 1st pickup thread since it is your first. In that sense, I don't think the 1st pickup thread gets "retied" when the 2nd comes around. That also means that people posting in the 2nd thread aren't doing it to top-post, but they're doing it because they had another pickup. Of course, this is purely conjecture as there is no written set of rules for the pickup threads.

As the pickup thread gets towards 50, maybe between about 40 and 50, anyone can start another. If you just put a new pickup in the old thread you are welcome to put it in the new one too...it's ok. I sort of feel bad for the last couple of folks that show their findings in the old thread when a new one starts...again, just post it again if you want to...It's all fun....>Getting back on topic I do use the search function sometimes and it works well.....regards

There are no requirements/limits as to how many posts you can make in a pick up thread. The simple rule that has been "adopted" is that as you can start a new pick up thread once the old one has reached 40-50 posts.

But I completely agree with Steve that there appears to be a tendency to start a new one in the upper 30s low 40s now. The reason for the rule, supposedly, was so that the thread wouldnt take to long to load. Frankly, that shouldnt be a real problem if you have broadband and if you dont, well, its sort of on you if it takes a while to load.

Josh - I guess the subject that "2nd" is modifying in "2nd November Pickup Thread" is ambiguous as it could mean:
1) The second thread for discussions of pickups in the month of November
or
2) Your second pickup during the month of November

I think I disagree.

The Modifiee (if in fact that is a word) is "November Pickup Thread". Therefore the reference to 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc is the "Thread".

I agree with the 40-50 rule.

I submit that you may post any number of items that you feel may be of interest regardless of when they were acquired.

Perhaps one of our English majors will chime in, but I'm pretty sure it can acceptably be understood both ways. Of course, now we can (but let's not) enter into a discussion of whether ambiguous means that grammatically it can be understood more then one way, or subjectively, it can be understood in more then one way (which clearly is the case here since I understood it differently then you).

The bottom line is that everyone who has been on this board since the pick up threads began getting split into 1st, 2nd, etc. know what is meant. It is the second (or third or fourth, etc) thread for pickups. Not a thread to post your second pickup of the month. Just trust me on this one.

Agree. Even though there are no "pick up thread rules" published anywhere (hee), the meaning and use are clear to those that have been on the board (or reading without posting) for any length of time.

I think it's another one of those things where, when you are assimilating into the group, you keep an eye on the landscape and start to understand the group's workings and norms. Because Lordy if we had to rely on proper English to convey the meaning of things as simple as pick-up thread use, we would be sunk!

But I also don't think it's ambiguous. Even if you can see an alternate meaning in that the thread counts each person's individual pick ups for the month, this meaning should be quickly rejected on the basis of impracticality. It would lead to having as many as a dozen threads because one or two people got that many cards in a month. It would also lead to many simultaneously active pick up threads as people added to the one that matched their individual pick up.

Not practical at all = likely not the meaning, despite any grammatical arguments.

And please Leon, don't let us get to the point where we have to have a posted set up pick up thread rule. Everyone knows how it works.

I guess my problem (well it's not really a problem) with your interpretation is that as long as these threads have been posted (and I expect that goes back many years even before me) I have never heard that interpretation raised.

Every month (sometimes even before the end of the month)or when the thread reaches 40-50 posts, someone starts a new thread. They are started chronologically and have reached as high as 6th as I recall.

Now for me or anyone else to have to know that the item I want to show off was the 4th item or the 5th or the 6th that I acquired during that particular month seems like an unnecessary exercise.

I arrived at my understanding by watching the threads over several months and I don't recall seeing someone ever post more then once per pickup thread (aside from a comment on another's pickup). As far as it being impractical, I'm certain the majority of us don't post everything we pick up each month - no one would need 16 or 17 pickup threads
As it seems everyone besides me read it as modifying the thread and not the person's pickup, I shall correct my understanding accordingly.

By the way - just to go back to the earlier comment regarding starting new pick up threads, if you look back at the 3rd November pick up thread, it is sitting at 39 posts. Hasnt even reached 40 and a 4th pick up thread was started. When I first joined the board, we had one pick up thread a month. Then there were complaints about the amount of time it took to load the threads so we started new ones when the thread reached about 50 posts. Fifty was the norm. Over time (ie the last couple of years) the number of posts has gradually shrunk before new threads are started. Lately, its much more common for a thread to be closer to 40 rather than 50 before a new one is started. Given the growth in broadband usage over the last few years I dont see why this is necessary (in other words, most people, by now, probably have high speed internet making the original justification for multiple pick up threads a moot point).

Here's a link to the discussion on pick up threads. I had forgotten that originally, we started a new thread at the 15th of the month but that was changed to the current system due to the loading times.

I think one of the good reasons for starting a new thread even before it hits 40 may be the time the thread has been up. For those who post pics through Net54 uploads the pics commonly are gone in about a week. For those of us who post pics from other sources, photobucket as an example, the pics will stay up for so long as the link is good.

With that said I think for a thread to be relevant that it should have a lifespan of one week regardless of whether it has hit the magic 40-50 posts.

Two pickup threads a month won't work due to the Ne54 temp files only hosting scans for approximately one week. Two years ago when I started the thread about this, and had only taken the moderator position 4-5 months earlier (I think), I was still on regular dial up...as where I live is out a little ways. There were others at that time in the same position(only had dial up). Download times were hideous. My guess is that 98% or more of our members now have high speed access and the downloads aren't an issue. Because of the temp files only staying for about a week, in Net54, I want to keep the threads the same as they have been. They work fine from what I see...Please try to let them get to between 40-50 before you start a new one. Rules have to be enforced and we have too da** many now so there won't be written rules about it, as long as there doesn't have to be. Also, lets don't get into semantics about this.....If you pick something up and want to show it ...please do so. Have fun collecting and don't worry so much.......best regards

Back to your initial question.....I probably SEARCH as much as I read the 1st page.....Recently I was on Page 291.

I find it really informative to go back and see what was posted on some particular subject that I currently may be
interested in. Also, this helps to avoid unnecessary redundancy in posting.
