You can buy complimenting non-card material. For example, original photos of T206 players can be affordable, along with period magazines, premiums and other memorabilia. Even the quality stuff can be a lot cheaper than cards. For example, you could buy a circa 1900 Cap Anson autographed Chicago City Clerk document on his personal stationary for a fraction of the cost of most of his cards. Plus, they will look great displayed with the cards.

Can you believe it that you can get both of these items together for less than a PSA10 1957 Topps Sandy Koufax and still have about $55,000 left over?
