A NYC dinner thread started by someone from the Second City...pretty cool.

Anyway, to continue- Michael suggested a pizza restaurant in the West Village. I'm going to suggest a date sometime mid-April. Anyone second the motion?

April? Sounds good to me. Anywhere in Manhattan is good. I would like to throw in an old suggestion... we can pick a night that the Yankees are playing (or Mets) and head to ESPN zone. Burgers, Wings, Beer and gigantic screens everywhere you look.

my suggestion was an italian restaurant (it's not a pizzeria barry), called Vento, great food, cool interior, 14th st. & 9th ave. relatively inexpensive.

but, just as before, i am open to anything.

I'm open for any kind of food at any type of restaurant, so I don't even need to vote. Just point me in the right direction. Both suggestions sound fine to me. But Rome wasn't built in a day...we still need to hear from others before we make a decision. We're still in the planning phase .

Weekend or weekday is fine, unless some people work in the city and would prefer a weeknight.

What does NTC stand for? Am I missing something obvious?

Edited to add we had the last one nailed in about 20-25 posts, I think.

Ok, a weeknight it is. I think consideration should be made for a relatively quietish restaurant so that we can talk about cards without impediment. That was sort of the plan behind Payard the last time: quiet, empty and good food (albeit the Early Bird Special time of 6 pm helped). Midown might be easier for those who don't live in NYC as it is more accessible to those coming in via train or driving. Since I live in Manhattan, I am open to all areas of the city; perhaps those that live outside of Manhattan who would be coming in could direct us to an area more convenient to their commute.

Let's agree to hold off on a decision for several days until others have a chance to see this and give their thoughts. Downtown is good for me coming from Brooklyn but midtown is fine, and a weeknight probably would be better for most.

The dinner you had was an agenda meeting to try to cure the hobby ills. Admirable - but not for me.

You can have a Hobby Cure Dinner II along those lines, and I am guessing I will not attend. While I admire your drive, I don't think I care about the "ills" as much as you might - and I don't want to make a mockery of what you are looking to accomplish.


Now, the dinner we had was open to anyone... It was not Hobby Cure II.

We tried to accomplish nothing. Very much like a seinfeld episode. It was about nothing. Well, actually it was about enjoying each other's company and camaraderie.

No minutes were taken. The only one with a paper and pen was the waiter... and he got things wrong. We all openly trimmed stuff... like our steaks. Pressed down the corners of our napkins, and maybe took some wrinkles out of them as well.


Just a good night out talking about cards with fellow collectors.

Yeah, I tend to agree with Joe here: if I want a night filled with curing the world's ills, I'll bring my entire law firm so that I can quadruple bill. The NYC Dinner Thread Dinner I was very low key and enjoyable. I think all those that attended (without speaking for anyone else who has not chimed in yet) would want the same for NYCDTD II.

Ours was an open dinner as well--in fact I paid for everything.

I assume the agenda is open and with Bruce there I am sure there will be some interesting things talked about. And of course in an open forum, I always have interesting things to talk about.

i guess i should chime in here, being that i was (along with barry) the only person who attended both "events"...

NYC Dinner I took place at Payard, which is an upscale French restaurant, it involved a few different courses, alcohol and no agenda, except to have a great meal, joke around, get to really know each other and to talk about cards, in that order.

Jim- what you hosted (as admirable as it was), was a "meeting" to discuss the issue of card altering. you brought in pizza and pepsi, which was much appreciated, but it was what it was, a meeting with an agenda, you had a note pad & pen. many interesting topics came up, and it was very informative. i look forward to NYC Meeting II.

but what the others (jeff, joe, barry, etc), are refering to in this thread, is NYC Dinner II, which i look forward to very much. EVERYONE is welcome to come, just leave your notepads home.

Jim- I don't think the pad and pencil is the issue. It's to have a social evening without an agenda. Should the conversation turn towards serious hobby issues, we can play it by ear. But we can discuss other things, too.

Our NYC dinner was not part II of the hobby cure meeting.


It was part one of an amicable social get together.

Jim- before this thread starts veering in the wrong direction, our last dinner consisted of a relaxed group of friends shooting the breeze, and baseball cards was the topic most widely discussed, as that was one thing we all had in common. But I don't think we want this to become a business meeting. Feel free to join us, and like I said, conversations tend to go off in different directions. But in no way should this be like the meeting we had in your office. We had guest speakers and we were there for a purpose. At our last dinner we just wanted to have fun, and this next one should be the same.
