This is a little of topic of cards but I located a great website for all the Sporting News archives at www.paperofrecord.com. Perhaps most of you are already aware of this site, but for those who don't know, this is fun stuff. |

No, I wasn't aware of these resources, and in the first few minutes of browsing I was able to find four new articles mentioning one of my cousins - tremendous find for me - thank you very much for sharing this....and I must say, really cool resource for getting a feel for the baseball news of the day (whatever day you choose!)...neat to see the different writing style of yesteryear... |

This could be a wonderful research vehicle, but it would take an enormous amount of time and patience to use it. |

you may have made the same mistake I did when I first used it...I came up with a similar problem when researching my cousins yesterday, BUT note that the search engine only searches for 5 years at a time, and the default start date is 1886. |

Illegible somewhat, but like a Doctor's chicken scratch, a little experience and you can breeze through most text. |

I was hoping that would help...was there a popular alternative spelling, or a nickname that might yield results? Does seem odd that it would yield so little for a person with a long career... |

I think it was somewhat common back then for the teams to go by multiple names including just the city they were from. Obviously, that would be an issue in big cities like Philadelphia, which might have more than one team. |

I'm not sure it's much of a secret that Google has acquired Paper of Record. This was old news on SABR-L at least a couple of months ago. |

Hey gang - I'm interested in going through many old issues of the Sporting News to do some research on a few photos and original art. I know Paper of Record was at one point acquired by Google, but I don't believe they ever made the Sporting News available through Google. From what I can tell, Paper of Record's original owners are making it available again on a subscription basis. Anyone used it lately and have any tips? Can I subscribe for one month only? Any info would be appreciated!
Thanks! |

I've been able to access The Sporting News online as a SABR member. One year membership runs $65 if you are age 30-64, else it drops to $45. This may be more than you wish to pay for access to the Sporting News but the other benefits may make it worthwhile.

Thanks, Joe! Looks like maybe I can get a 25% discount on a monthly membership through TSN, so I might try that and then join SABR if I like it and want to use it for an extended period.

Hey Kevin,
Interesting you would mention the March 23, 1911 issue. I recently won an original copy of it on eBay. Thought it might have a nice big ad for M101-2 in it. Unfortunately, there was not, and of course there was no JJ supplement. Still, lots of interesting articles and fun to look through. Mark |
