There was an article in the metro section of the Post the other day where the reporter followed a curator at the National Archives into a climate-controlled vault containing historic old documents. One was a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation signed by Lincoln. The signature was wobbly, the curator explained, because Lincoln's hand was weakened by having shaken many peoples' hands just prior to signing. Without that info, a authenticator might be inclined to deem such a John Hancock a fake. |
