It has been a very good month (some of these were purchased last month, but arrived in the last week) ...

127 graded T206 commons -- almost 25% of the set (mostly 3s, a bunch of 2s, and some great 1s). All the PSA graded examples were purchased off the B/S/T from a board member -- thanks Andy




Two T206 HOFers graded BVG 3, each with Polar Bear backs -- these BVGs do not scan well (glare on the inner plastic sleeve), so I resorted to the camera




1936 R311 Charlie Gehringer (Leather Finish)




A little OT, but a nice early SGC Mantle




Even more OT -- hey, this is a "pick-up" thread, and this has three pick-ups (for those who care, this is a 2001 Gibson Les Paul Custom Shop Peter Frampton signature model)

There were a ton of Heinie's back in the 30s. Was it a German nickname version of Henry? I wonder if people in the U.S. stopped using Heinie for Henry during/after WW2.

I was actually thinking the same thing, King. So many Heines (22) and the last one last played in 1944 with the bulk around WWI.

i am afraid the cicotte may not grade, do you recall whom you purchased it from, since it was so recent you may be able to undo the deal, it "appears" to be trimmed, while it is sometimes difficult to ascertain from a scan, it sure looks suspect. size it with a few random raw t206's and check the top border.

great looking card but again i don;t think it will grade and wanted to give you a headsup so that you might be able to return it if you paid full market price.

Scott -- I thought the same thing on the Cicotte top border dropping from left to right. Sometimes my scanner makes borders appear wavy when they aren't. Hopefully thats the case here.

Thanks guy's for the heads up. I actually got it from a trusted board member who i know would back it up. The scan does make it look very distorted. I will be sending it off to GAI....We shall see what they say. Hopefully all is well.

Papke was known as the "Conquerer of Ketchel" beating the unstoppable once. The story was that just after they shook hands before fight started, Ketchel and the Ref turned away, and Papke slugged Ketchel in the back of the head. Many thought this was the only reason Papke won. Ketchel won rematch.

Nelson and Wolgast met a few times. In one, Nelson was beaten so bad the Ref hold him if he did not defend himself the Ref would call the fight. In the next round, Nelson jumped out of his corner, ran across the ring, and set a fighting stance. Unfortunately, Nelson had set his stance infront of the ring post, not Wolgast. Ref stopped fight.

Scott - Thanks for the kind words. I purchased the Wagner last night from a fellow board member and I agree with you 100% - I thought the card looked very very nice and am happy to have it in my set! The back is as clean as the front - NO paper loss and no markings! I felt that this Wagner truly epitomizes "buying the card, not the holder"!

Jon: that is a nice Wagner (and your Taylor is pretty nice too -- I have a Guild acoustic that I love, but I've been thinking about upgrading to a Taylor or Martin).

Scott, I just noticed the Papke card. Nice. An interesting bit of trivia is that both he and Ketchel were later shot to death. Ketchel was shot, I think, when still in his boxing prime and Papke shot his ex-wife and himself after he was washed up.

Here are four 1964 Morinaga cards (l-r) Shigeo Nagashima [6 batting titles, 5 MVP, 2 HR titles, 444 HR, 5 RBI titles]; Masaichi Kaneda (400 wins, 4,490 K's); Sadaharu Oh. The catcher is Katsuya Nomura [657 HR, 1,988 RBI, 5 x MVP, triple crown]. The cards are about PC sized and were made by a candy company.
