Given Patrick's good idea for a Grand Slam thread, here's another to post our cards. The idea is to represent Cobb/Wagner/Ruth/Johnson/Mathewson each with a type card from your collection. |

Hal, the least you could do is show some cards that are actually in decent shape. What's all that garbage? |

I definately like the big bordered cards like the Plows and Star Players, but when they add some ornateness, like on the Spalding, it seems to detract from the overall appearance. imo. |

Screw Cobb. The rest of these guys all won World Series rings. Each of these is my favorite image of the player of any card they appear on except for Johnson, which I like due to the rarity of the issue and the fact that it's Cuban. The Ruth image does appear on his E220 card, but on the exhibit they airbrushed out the stands in the background, which really makes Ruth stand out, and the quality of the image on the exhibit is infinitely better.

wow, I got to say that the attack on Hal's collection seems a bit uncalled for. he contributes a hell of a lot to this board and if he wants to show us his cards or show off his cards, its fine be me. first, I enjoy seeing them; and second, lets be honest - ALL of us who are posting in these threads are doing it because we want to show off our cards. |

Never in my life have I seen someone operate a business selling worthless things to people for huge sums of money... and then COMPLAINING when the buyers are proud of the things they bought and want to share them with others. |

Peter - Im referring to those of us who post pics. Frankly, I dont see why everyone thinks showing off your cards is a bad thing - I consider it more like sharing. I for one like seeing (and drooling over) cards that I see on this board. I also enjoy getting an idea what fellow collectors collect. |

I would guess that Ryan's Matty is an uncataloged strip card from the mid 19 teens. I don't think Matty slipped into any of the Sporting News, Am Caramels, or baking issues that used that same design. They came just a wee bit later. |

I didn't want to repeat types of cards, I actually have a nice m116 Mathewson, but since my only Wagner card is also a m116, I elected to show the t205 Mathewson (which I personally do not like that image). My portrait Walter Johnson t206 is also my favorite card of him, but since I was using the t206 Cobb, I went with the CJ Johnson (so as not to have 2 t206's represented). Here's my effort: |

No, the Matty isn't a strip card. It's from the same issuer as the M101-4 & M101-5 sets (Felix Mendelsohn) and was from a set that was supposed to be issued in 1917, but never was. Here's a link to a recent article in SCD about the issue:
