I know he is in the HOF, it is his rookie card in very nice shape, and E107's are hot but $40 grand for a George Davis just blew me away. Maybe 2 heavy hitters went toe to toe on this one. Any other reactions to the auction results, which undoubtedly set another record. |

i have been tracking a couple of other single card lots, where the prices are already 3-5X's what the cards have recently brought or "thought to be worth". it is probably a case of 2-3 bidders running up the items, as the general market just does not have a broad enough base to support price levels such as these. |

The hobby is a runaway train, and these extravagant prices should surprise noone. |

while i do not think it would influence the bidding or the outcome one way or another, i would rather point them out after the auction. |

It's not even his rookie. That would be the N142 Duke cabinet. |

I like how Heritage Auctions has the vig written in right next to the bid key. I wish Mastro did. I just realized that an item with a current bid of $3,076 will cost $3,976.20 to take to the next level when the vig is included. |

Adam--I'm sure most auctions houses have thought it through and they feel showing the lower number is more likely to encourage bidding. The $3076 was really $3614 to start with so the raise to the next level is still only a 10% ($361) increase. |

The funny thing is that the price of the George Davis hasn't changed in over a week. It spiked to that level after the first few days of bidding. Prices are simply amazing and of course...shut out. |

Hal- the first rule of collecting is there is no right way or wrong way to collect. You don't even need to explain why you bought it. If you love it, end of story. |

I was high bidder on a lot when it the auction allegedly closed, had been all day, yet it went into "extended time" instead where I lost the item. Why, if I am the high bidder at the close, doesn't it close? Isn't that the idea of a closing time? I mean, why have a closing time if you aren't going to close the auction at that time? What's the point? Reminds me of the Seinfeld where they take the car reservation but don't have the car... |

I think the explanation of the method of closing is pretty clear in the catalogue. It was supposed to close this way last time, but I don't think it did. Anyway, last night was great because it was over relatively early. |

I can understand the genesis of the concept--wanting to wait until the phones closed down when the auctioneer needed to field individual calls, tally the results, etc., and people could not get through to make their bids before a closing time. But with instantaneous internet bidding, I don't see why responsible adults cannot make note of the closing on a lot and bid in a timely manner as they would have to on Ebay. |
