I have two Ty Cobb strip cards. Here is what I believe to be a W516-1 Ty Cobb and a W516-1-2 Ty Cobb. The 2005 SCD does not list the W516-1-2 set, but it is now in the 2006 book. This makes it easier. The W516-1-2 states the the images, including the "IFC" copyright symbol, are reversed from the W516-1 set. I had asked several people about the two different cards, but I could not learn anything. Now that the new book is out, I see it listed. Now my problem is that the book states the the W516-1-2 "are printed only in black, red and yellow. Does this mean the the orange should not be in this set, or is orange okay because red and yellow make orange? Any help here will be greatly appreciated? |

W516 strip cards are a very complex issue that the big book only partially tackles. Shade variations are common; in the analogous boxing cards (W529) I have counted several color and shade variations. |

The SCD is really deficient on W516-2s. I have probably 5-6 distinct types of them and my SCD shows only 2. |

The difference between the 516-1 and 516-2 is that the latter has its image reversed; is my understanding. |

I don't know if these will help, but these two are labeled by PSA as W516-1 |

I think you get the most value out of them when they are graded with a numerical grade - such as SGC 40. An "Authentic" grade doesn't get the same money, even if it looks nice. Given that the strip cards are hand-cut, my observation is that SGC and PSA will look at the size of the card as the reason whether to give it a numerical grade or not. Recently I had a couple of cards (a W514 and a W551) rejected by SGC because it did not meet size requirements - but they did grade 12 other strip cards - I guess because they did meet size requirements. |

I sent a 1955 Johnston Aaron in to PSA. They come out of a booklet and are greaded "hand cut". Mine was a full card and rejected for "evidence of trimming". I thought that was odd for a hand cut card. |

I have catalogued 7 different varieties in the boxing sets of this format (Burdick labeled it W529), involving image flips, number changes and font changes. Then there are the shading variations. And that doesn't count the set or two that have the Universal legend at the top affecting the three middle cards. |
