Interesting Book Found Today

At the library's used book sale. It's called "American Premium Guide To Baseball Cards" by Ron Erbe. It has a fantastic section devoted to the Old Judge N172 set with a checklist for the numbered cards, an alphabetical checklist for the "long unnumbered set", a checklist by team, and a checklist for all of the subsets (Spotted Tie, Browns Champs, New York NL Script, Pacific Coast League, Two Player Cards, and Hall of Famers). I'm sure there have been numerous cards discovered since this book came out in 1982, but this is a great book that I had never seen before today.

As a side note I must have picked up about 100 baseball books today. This is by far the best selection they have put out in years, and I even picked up a Harmon Killebrew book that must have been donated and never put on the shelves because it doesn't have any library markings at all - and it's been autographed on the inside cover!!! I also picked up a cool book called "The Great American Baseball Scrapbook" that shows tons of cards and memorabilia.

This is a fantastic book and one of the first ones I bought when Lee and I got serious about collecting when we were kids. Sadly, I tossed the book when I sold off my collection. A fellow board member was kind enough to loan me his copy when I was develping my player database. This book is a great resource for finding what sets each player can be found in. I believe Kieth Miller was also a co-author of the book.

FYI -- It was M. Keith Mitchell who was credited as a co-author in that Erbe book. BTW -- when I saw Keith at the 2004 National he mentioned he was battling cancer -- I did not see him at the 2005 National and I was wondering if anyone had any updates on his health.
And for those who do not know Keith, there was once an interview with Keith in which he went after collecting Old Judges on three different occassions and he probably knew as much about them as any person in this country.

is that they often contain information that is not in the current references. What with the SCD guide deleting vintage stuff, save your old guides--you never know what you might need in them.

The information contained in this book on N172's I've never seen in any other guide. It also lists the boxers in the set.

Keith is an old friend who has helped me greatly over the years by teaching me alot about the Old Judge set. He is one of the most knowledgeable collectors I have ever met and also one of the nicest. Unfortunately, he is in late stage cancer, so lets say a prayer for a miracle.

I just ordered one from Amazon.com also.

I had a copy of it for years that I originally bought in the early '80s and wore it out! I remember using it as my checklist book for all my sets and had to use masking tape on the spine to keep it together. I just looked through my books and it appears I threw it away when I moved from Montana to Texas last December, so all my annotations are gone but now I'll have a new (used)copy to enjoy again
