1924 cards

Hello,a friend of mine has a few 1924 cards from Willard's Chocolate sport champion set.He has Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth.He,and I,are wondering how to find a value for these 2 cards.They look to be in very good shape but he hasn't got them graded.I've found limited info on the net about these cards.Anyone that could help would be great!

According to the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards, the Ruth is worth 2200 in Near Mint, 1100 in Ex, and 660 in VG. Cobb is 1500 in NM, 750 in Ex and 450 in VG. This book is available on Amazon and at most major bookstores.

if he hasn't gotten them graded how this one appears to be in an SGC holder with the squared corners. Might want to crop that photo a little closer.....very fishy......

Julie, I do the same thing, but depending on how you have your contrast and brightness set, you can usually tell if someone has scanned a card in an SGC holder with black paper behind it. I noticed that it appeared to be in an SGC holder.

Whenever I see a "raw" scanned with a black background, I always change my brightness and contrast to check and make sure it's not a scan of holdered SGC card.

the pic looks like a graded card because it IS !!!

i guess some people are just looking to find frauds instead of helping out someone.i wonder why one site i found said the card's price was 20,000.....musta been a typo or just a price someone was trying to sell it for.

These are another issue that are rare but with relatively little demand, in my opinion. On the plus side, great players and unusual poses. On the negative side, they are not colorful. The SCD prices are probably fairly accurate, although the way some auction prices are going these days, who really knows?

The value of your friend's cards is based on their condition. The higher the condition, the more they are worth, without exception. Therefore, no one can give you a precise value without images of the actual cards.

The BMW website is asking $20K for this card because it has been graded a 92. That is a higher grade than the NrMt grade listed in the Standard Catalog at $1100. Personally, I would never pay 19x the Near Mint value for one that is slightly nicer than Near Mint. In fact, in my personal opinion, you'd have to be insane to do so. But there are a few collectors out there who insist upon having the very best condition of a particular card. And these folks will pay 19x the book price or more. There have been 1952 Topps commons with a book value around $100 that have sold for several thousands. As you can see from the BMW website, BMW's inventory is geared mostly to this type of collector.
