Why dosent BVG have a greater presense in pre-war cards? I was just wondering?

To have credibility, you have to be accountable
for what you grade. Take s/n 0000027775 which is
a Ty Cobb skinned and re-sandwiched with a Drum
back. Some collectors have written/spoken with them
about this card. There never was a re-examination of
the card by Beckett to my knowledge, in their email
response to me they have no intention of investigating
more. Further to that, they have no guarantee or refund
policy regarding such circumstances.

It appears that Beckett has on occasion chosen to grade older cards recently cut from sheets (we're talking like older Topps, not Hostess Twinkies). For some collectors of high grade cards in certain genres (not Pre-War baseball), this has not been endearing .... Duly note that I heard this in part from a well known dealer who openly said he had Beckett grade cards he cut from sheets and he first asked them if they would. Apparently, the dealer himself was not being sneaky, in that he told Beckett he was sending in cards cut from sheets. He also was open to the buying public, publicly detailing where the sheets were found. Heck, I even bought fair to poor grade multi-card panels he advertised as being cut from uncut sheets.

I should note that I have no axe to grind, no preference in grading company or even own a graded card. Being a specialist in vintage Jean Shrimpton and Gia Carangi photographs, it's unlikely I could hold less bias on the subject.

Even though my good friend Rich works there it's hard to take a company's grading seriously when they won't stand behind what they grade. I offered to buy the Ty Cobb Drum back that was on ebay and have them look at it. If it wasn't good they were to reimburse me for what I paid for it. I spoke to the President of the company. He said he wouldn't do it and their contention was/is that the card is good. That was the last time I thought about BVD, or BVG or whatever BVxx.....My thought is they provide a very good service for shiney crap that we could mostly care less about........later

What Leon said in spades....Beckett makes horrendous mistakes and then won't stand behind them. Say what you want about PSA and SGC but they have tried to correct their most glaring mistakes.

Rule of thumb: The more certain a seller is of the authenticity of the item and the proof that it is authentic, the more liberal the authenticity guarantee .. If a seller is 100 percent certain an item is authentic and he can prove it, he knows it's moot that twice the sale price plus free shipping is to be paid if the item turns out to be fake.
