Baseball Books: Have a Dust Jacket?

I've been collecting baseball books for a while now, and I often see descriptions in booksellers' listings that the book has "no dust jacket--as issued".

Sometimes, I have a copy of the same printing of the book with a dust jacket sitting on my shelf; others, I have not seen a dust jacket in over 20 years of collecting.

Pre-1900 books mainly did not have dj's, but I have a couple of dj's from the 1890's.

If anyone can assist in verifying any of these titles as having or not having a dust jacket, that would be great.

For the post-1900, pre-1930, here is a small list

None assumed

Spalding, America's National Game
Braathen, Ty Cobb, Idol of the Baseball Fandom

Never seen or heard, but should have a dj

Mathewson, Pitching in a Pinch (have seen later putnam dj)

Mathewson, Won in the Ninth

Many say no dj, but I have or have seen a dj

Evers, Touching Second
Evers, Baseball in the Big League
Cobb, Busting Em
Asenback, Humour Among the Minors (been told of dj, haven't seen it)
Rice, Base Ball Ballads (been told of dj, haven't seen it)
McGraw, How to Play Baseball
McGraw, My Thirty Years in Baseball

Can anyone add more information?

Max, I would guess that the Matty book "Won in the ninth" probably never did have a dust jacket...with the number of those books that were presentation copies signed by Matty you would think the owners of those books would keep the jacket if it had had one. I would put that book on the "None assumed" list just becuase of that.

Max- your list appears correct, and the only known copy of Busting 'Em with a dj was Steve Cummings'. I was fortunate to be able to auction that one. And I've seen the Evers dj- it's identical to the printed cover. Likewise with Baseballogy, I've seen one with a dj and it's identical to the cover.

I wouldn't assume that people would have kept the dj's to a presentation copy. Most of the Babe Ruth's Own Book of Baseball presentation copies don't have a dj, but the book in fact did come with a dj.

A well-respected poster in this thread also assures me that Won in the Ninth has a dj.

I do have a copy of Baseballogy in dj.

Another title to add, poetry genre, is Kirk's Right off the Bat, which does have a dj. In the 2 copies I've seen, the dj is miscut shorter than the book.

Max I can't help with the list but I'm curious- can you list the pre-1900 Jackets that you know of- I've never run across any- that seemed to be the era of the paste down covers.

The one I can think of off the top of my head with a dust jacket pre-1900 is Gilbert Patten's The Rockspur Nine .

The paste-down covers went through 1925 or so, and almost every one I have seen has had a dust jacket.

Dust jackets hardly existed in the 19th century. It's a 20th century creation.

Max, I was looking through my catalogs and found a book titled With Mask and Mitt by A. T. Dudley, 1906. It had a dust jacket with it. Don't know if this was of interest or not.

The A. T. Dudley books came with various dust jackets. At this point, I have only seen them on the "plain" later printings and not on the earlier printings which had embossed colors. They are fairly tough to find in dust jackets.
