Jeff O"Many respected observers regard Joe Malone as the greatest all-around scorer who ever laced on a pair of skates. 'He might have been the most prolific scorer of all time if they had played more games in those days' says Frank J. Selke, the former Canadiens' managing director who remembers Malone as a young professional.
The handsome native of Quebec City played his early hockey for teams in Ontario before being signed by the Quebec Bulldogs. His acquisition by the Canadiens for the 1917-18 season was considered a coup of major proportions. A centerman, Malone was the Jean Beliveau of his day.
Malone's most notable achievement was his record-breaking seven goals in a game scored on the night of January 31, 1920, in Quebec City."
