Just saw an ebay card claiming the '33 Goudeys were the first gum set - wasn't it the e92 Dockman's? or something else? |

It is difficult to say whether John Dockman's (or anyone else's) early experiments with "gum" produced a confection that was closer to candy or modern-day gum. The "E" designation DOES stand for "Early Candy & Gum" cards in the American Card Catalog, however. To that extent, the 1933 Goudey set was not the first to advertise "gum" as an additive in its packs. |

Not that anyone wants to know, but the first baseball cards issued with "gum" were from the 1888 E223 Series. A decade later, Whitehead & Hoag produced a series of baseball pins that were distributed with Cameo Pepsin Gum. John Colgan was actually one of the first to "mass produce" flavored chicle or gum, but did not include it with baseball ephemera until 1909. |
