I believe you are getting Cal confused with Lou Gehrig who frequently struggled to get in one at-bat just to keep the streak alive. When Ripken was asked whether he had similar intentions, his reply was that he did not plan to play if he couldn't help the team. And this guy played every inning of every game for quite a few years! It is simply, in my opinion, the most remarkable record in major league baseball, especially so since he didn't accomplish it as a first baseman, but as a shortstop.
