I wish eBay would ban consignment altogether or just allow self-bidding in their ToS as well. At this point better to have everyone on an equal playing field versus users having to guess which consignment companies are actually policing their bidders and consignors (correct answer: none).

I just looked at his recent feedback. Curious like 6/7 of the last 10 or so feedbacks were exactly the same (text as shown below) BUT from all different people??!?!! I've only been selling on ebay for 30 years so likely I don't understand....

Outstanding seller! The item was exactly as described, arrived quickly, and was packaged with great care to ensure it stayed in perfect condition. The pricing was very competitive, and the seller was open to reasonable negotiations, making the transaction smooth and stress-free. Communication was excellent throughout the process, and the seller was friendly and professional at every step. I couldn't have asked for a better buying experience. Highly recommend this seller!

Ebay is now leaving positive feedback when an item shows delivered and the buyer has not left feedback. It started in October. The buyers can update the feedback if they want but eBay knows that more than 60% of buyers don�t leave feedback so they started this program to help sellers who deliver items on time etc. I think it�s after a week when the buyer has left no feedback and I believe the same holds true for buyers feedback from seller.

You can go to feedback and there will be on top right something that says eBay Automated Feedback. That�s the ones that eBay left through their AI.

Shill bidding is not going away. The reality is that you're just going to have to accept it if you want to play. It doesn't make it right, but is your annoyance going to stop the problem?

Life presents far too many other headaches to get so worked up over shill bidding. I need less cause for aggravation in my life, how about you?

Just treat any auction as if your max bid was tantamount to your max offer. If you think you might be tempted to bid more on impulse, simply don't follow along with the auction in live time. Set your snipe, forget it, and deal with other aspects of life. If you get it for less than your full bid amount, good for you! If you have to pay the full amount, so what?

You have reached a stage of acceptance. I commend that, but many of us are still stuck with the anger, part and denial lol the stages of grief, good grief the show must go on.

I came to that same realization. I just don't care anymore plus we just had a thread that many praised Rick and we will have another real soon. I honestly can't imagine a big seller on eBay that doesn't shill.

It�s no different from walking down the street, seeing someone assaulted, and deciding, �Well, things like this happen�nothing I can do,� before continuing on. The same mindset applies when we stay silent while someone mistreats a friend or loved one, or when we choose not to vote because we assume the outcome is predetermined. Indifference doesn�t protect us; it enables bad action.

At some point, maybe the younger generation won�t tolerate this behavior and will help clean up the hobby. As with most things, real change tends to happen only when the negatives finally outweigh the positives.

In other industries�such as dealer auto-auction software�technology already exists to limit shill bidding. These systems combine behavioral analysis through machine learning, IP and user-account tracking, and even blockchain-based verification to detect and prevent fraudulent activity. They monitor patterns such as rapid bid jumps, unusually small increments, or inconsistent user behavior to flag potential bad actors. It�s not perfect but maybe it�s a start.

Part of the issue is I'm living through my 4th decade of bad actors getting in trouble and cruising right back into the hobby. Some go to prison, some pay fines, and many have nothing happen to them.

They rarely sneak back into the hobby under the radar or hide behind business paperwork. They tend to not really care that their name is out there in the public for the hobby to see.

If there's going to be people getting fed up, I'm down for the self-policing, but I'm yet to see the numbers actually stick around and follow through. When someone gets weak enough for their auctions to suffer, people swoop in and before long they're right back on a level playing field with the good actors. After missing out on more than a few periods of good deals over a moral failing that will not be punished by the hobby, I figured why should I miss out...

That said, some of these decades-long serial crooks are going to have to deal with a oddly internet savvy and a modern hustle-culture heavy group of people...TCG/Pokemon collectors do not totally share the same mindset and morals of traditional card collectors. Pissing those guys off might lead to some things they're not expecting.

Most major auction houses have already looked at the options and decided to indemnify themselves with shilling/house-bidding clauses. For the most part they know their bidders and issue 1099s accordingly. They also attract bigger items because they are negotiable on seller fee and reserve terms.

On the other hand eBay is happy to allow another level of obfuscation by allowing consignors to middleman sales, effectively killing any KYC (know your consignor). They of course 'know' bidders, but connecting them to any particular item is impossible.
