It's a cool box Cody congrats on the pickup! I've been after one but always roll my eyes when it's advertised as original gumballs. I have yet to see one sold that has gum that actually looks like the balls that are on the box

1) You can currently buy identical gumballs(google baseball gumballs) 2) So many of these 100+ years old boxes still contain "original gum". Seriously what are the odds?? 3) In my opinion the phrases on the contained gumballs just doesn't fit. The phrases lead me to believe they would have originally been in a machine where it would be a suprise of which ball you would get. If you get "fly out" or "strike out" out of a machine you will keep putting coins in until you get a "home run" ball! Who in their right mind is going to choose anything other than "home run" when you can choose your own gumball? ![]() ......I vote not original Last edited by ruth-gehrig; Today at 09:25 AM. |

This piece was originally part of the Al Tapper collections sold by SCP auctions in 2021 along with several other unique items of his. While we can never be 100% sure of the claims that the gum balls are original to the piece, I’m guessing that some research had gone into them along the way to keep them with the box in such a prestigious collection. While there are modern gum balls sold with the same print, someone would have had to go to painstaking lengths to artificially age and show proper deterioration to them for the sake of display. The boxes sell in similar price ranges with or without the gum balls, so I guess I’m not sure what would be the point as it doesn’t really add to the value that much, if at all. The white has yellowed on them and many show degradation to varying degrees. So the original auction from the original collector lists as original, so I’ll take them on their word and they definitely pass the eye test as I’ve picked through a couple to read what ones were included. I was more excited by the box rather than the candy.

Only one way to tell Cody, pop one of those old-timey gumballs in your mouth, bite down hard, and see if you lose a tooth. - |

Anything is possible - they certainly look old and there’s some messed up print on some of them - irregardless it’s a terrific piece !
