Kicking off the month with a couple tobacco cards. The Ganzel came from Chappell Cards at my local show in Columbus, OH this morning. Can't beat a clean and centered T206.

The card you posted made me curious about your site. You have a great collection of rare cards that present way better than their technical grades.

I have what I feel is only a decent collection compared to what others have and to what I use to have back in the 1980's and 90's, but having fun rebuilding it. Regarding grades. I have like most other collectors, a few cards that looks much better then their technical grades suggest.

So, to rephrase, I enjoyed looking at your collection and appreciate your discerning eye for picking up nice looking rare cards, often of HOFers.

Nice E107 Overprint! One of the very few, all of which are one of a kind, without the two spots of mounting damage at the top. A rarity among rarities.

As a kid we played a tabletop game called Sports Illustrated All-Time All-Star Baseball. It was my introduction to vintage baseball that used color charts with named players (some blanks) and custom dice. We played hundreds and hundreds of games, so much fun.
One of the players I recall always doing well for me was Harry Hooper from the Boston Red Sox; he was a very good hitter, a fast runner, and a terrific outfielder. Well, when I saw a boardie had this card for sale I of course had to have it! (I don’t know why it’s “Ed” Hooper) |

Every year in my travels, I search through thousands of postcards at flea markets, antique stores, garage sales, etc. I rarely ever find anything.
Today, I spotted a box of vintage postcards and this was in the first stack of postcards that I picked up. I feel that the 1939 postmark is rather late for this issue, but maybe the sender had it laying around for a while. |

Thought you might like this photo, Jim. Picked it up from Leland's a while back. First game I ever saw was at the Polo Grounds seventy years ago. Been a Giants fan ever since.

...................... one of the sadder stories .....................
up36.jpg McGraw and McLean got on handsomely until June 1915, when McLean was again suspended for drinking. The Giants were at the Buckingham Hotel in St. Louis, where McLean confronted McGraw. Words were exchanged, McLean lunged at McGraw, and a melee ensued. A half-dozen ballplayers jumped in, furniture was smashed, and McLean fled into the night. His major-league career was over. Larry played some semipro ball but soon drifted out of the game. Not much is known of McLean’s life after baseball, but it’s a safe bet that much of it was spent in saloons. On March 24, 1921, he got into an argument in a Boston speakeasy. When he attempted to climb over the bar, the bartender drew a pistol and shot him. McLean staggered outside and died on the street. He was 39 years old. After his death, the Reach Guide reflected that he was “a man of great size, a convivial disposition and a bad temper when under the influence of liquor, which led him into many more or less serious rows during his baseball career.” -- Mike Lackey (SABR) |

A common back of a fairly common HOFer, but this Jimmy Collins with a SC350,25, officially completes the backs line and HOFer set (minus the big two).
Once I get moved and all the guys back together, I’ll work on a post to show the full backs line with a different HOFer in each slot, plus Shag and Hooker in the two SL slots, and Merkle filling the slot left over after each HOFer. Lots of fun pickups this month, congrats to all! Bob

This young man arrived in the mail today, 1914 Cracker Jack Chief Meyers. I’ve been trying to get this card for quite some time, and a few weeks back when Heritage had it as part of their auction, I slapped my bid down. And I hung in there and actually won the card.
Now it definitely has character and the hammer price for ALL that character was good…..BUT…… Buyers Premium $77 Service and Handling fee $26.38 Sales Tax $37.41 Brought the hammer to an extra $140.79( And I knew I’d have extra costs, ain’t my first auction, but still….knowing don’t make it hurt less) And I know, many of you spend $10,000 on a card, esp at auctions, or more, and your fees are higher than mine, but that is over a 1/3 rd of what I paid for the card. It’s hard to stay away from some of these auctions as they really do offer great items, but the “ouch” factor does get somewhat ridiculous. Happy to add the Chief to the collection and happy it’s a 1914. I’ve actually been lucky to score a few 1914’s lately, not that 1915’s aren’t welcome…..they are ALWAYS welcome.

Back-to-back 1914 Cracker Jacks!
I’m good friends with an executive at Heritage and yet I never participate in their auctions because too much juice. Actually, I don’t participate in any auctions (for a variety of reasons). |

I know auction extras create a bit of sticker shock, and everyone gets caught up in bidding without really considering these extras, but Heritage does show what the next bid is including the BP and does let you calculate the shipping costs.
They also have a page about what does or doesn't get charged sales tax. It's not that easy to find so here is a link https://sports.ha.com/information/st...les-tax-info.s
