If any one has a time machine I can borrow for two weeks or so, I'm pretty sure I can get at least a 30,000% ROI on these. Will gladly compensate you with a 5% cut.
PS...How was shipping so much more efficient (two weeks?), not to mention free, in 1964?

Not sure I had seen this pennant without the Frank Chance reference before.

It seemed a strong price considering that the fading. On a separate note, I managed to win this Athletics pennant in the auction.

Nice pickup Gary... very nifty embroidered Athletics pennant. Super stylish!
To answer your question, the "Frank Chance's Cubs" version came in 2 sizes... Oversized (like the Memory Lane example) and a version that's sized about mid-way between 3/4 and full size. I have the latter, pictured below. My thought is that the "Frank Chance" version was sold around 1910-12. When Chance subsequently left the Cubs to manage the Yankees in 1913, Repco probably removed his name from the pennant. So I would guess that the Memory Lane example was manufactured around 1913-14.

Thanks. It from the 1910s and is 20 inches long.
Thanks Mark for the info about the 2 RepCo Cubs pennants.

Wow, that really picked up at the end. The purple is the one that just sold for $1,200+. The Red one, which is clearly much older, is on Worthpoint. My gut reaction was that the purple was much newer, but I have to admit that I gave it a long questioning look. With things like this, I also always wonder why there are not more examples if it truly is a reproduced/modern version. Why bother to make it if you are going to make so few?

Based on appearance in the pics alone, I’m on the fence. The graphic is spot on identical. With a repro you can usually see differences but not here. But the creasing is odd and it didn’t crack the paint. Most notably, the stitching on the back is unusual for a pennant that old, although it’s similar to “Epstein”. It actually resembles a Keezer as far as how it was stitched and the appearance of the tassels.
Obviously it will take a collector 0.1 seconds to know for sure upon holding it. Last edited by thetahat; 01-14-2025 at 08:42 AM. |

Another significant difference is how close/far the stitching is to the edges of the spine. That suggests these were not made at the same time.

The red one looks as a pennant from that era should. The stitching, suppleness, and wear all look the part. The graphics have that 80 year crackle look to them. To me, this does not appear to be a modern repro, rather a late 60’s version of the original. I have bought from that seller before and I don’t believe there was any nefarious intent, just a mistake.

I picked up this oversized, early one with some of the most beautiful embroidery I have seen on a pennant. Could it be Tigers or not? I believe the interlocking letters spell MICH. It's great either way, but I would love to hear opinions.

Agree with Rob. I do think the letters spell out "MICH" but it's most likely a City Souvenir Pennant. Nothing at all to indicate it's baseball-related, although the color scheme doesn't rule it out.
Gorgeous and majestic pennant, either way!

Wow, what a beautiful, 4-letter monogram pennant! But, yeah, I agree: this is likely a travel/souvenir pennant.

Displaying my favorites from my very modest collection of football pennants. Trench really produced some quality in the 50s and 60s. The fully colorized 49ers is the most attractive pennant I’ve ever seen, in any sport. The “Go Get ‘Em Rams” might be top 5.
What pennant of yours is your favorite, putting value aside, strictly in terms of “eye appeal”? Last edited by thetahat; 01-17-2025 at 04:09 PM. |

Hank, I think the Packers is mid-late 50s and the Texans is 1961 or 62. There’s a white spine and red spine version. I’m not a football pennant expert but I think there might be a red felt version of this with the AFL trademark? Not positive …

Some great pennants on the thread this week. Love the Texans penannts and the 49er's disply.
I've had a couple of new arrivals this week. The Giants is from the grommet series. Except for some fading to the green color, it's in great shape. It could do with a gentle clean but I'm not willing to risk it. The Cardinals is a mini pennant but I've not seen it before except in Mike Egner's book.

Yeah "felt" was a bit of a stretch. Material looks very similar to the bizarre "1938" Cubs pennant we discussed a page back or so.

As you wish.... I think Greg has one of these too, just maybe not on display. It is much tougher to find that the non-blue. Not sure if they were all blue and most faded, or if some were just more blue to begin with.

Had this discussion with another board member regarding the color of the grass in Trench stadium pennants. Have seen nearly mint condition pennants with vivid paint colors … except for yellow grass on the playing field. Yet there are some that are deep green. For some reason you see green grass more with White Sox and Cardinals pennants. Were they all made green and it just faded quickly? Who knows … |
