This one says, " One of the Brotherhood 1890" which must be a reference to the Players' League. Kids always make me smile. Sorry for being so large.

The back of this Zeenut card makes me smile because of all the effort Buck Barker did to wrap the biographical info of the player on the front (not shown) around the James Cagney transfer on the back.

Only example of a card I've seen with Brother Matthias in it, and the only copy I've seen, and Fred Merkle in Yankees gear with a cigar is pretty cool. Maybe more are out there somewhere? Babe Ruth and wife in the center gifting the car to his mentor in front of St. Mary's school is pretty sweet too.

Charlie Hollocher was a great baseball player who's career was pretty much derailed by crippling depression.
Numerous times during his career he disappeared from the team without warning, outright quit the team, or left to be treated for "stomach ailments." He walked away from the game at age 28. He killed himself at age 44. It's nice to see him in what I would assume was a period of happiness. The smile seems genuine enough, anyway. |

I get a kick out of several of the T206 players. I think Otto Knabe's picture is one of the funniest. First, the perspective makes him look short, like he has to reach way up! And then also, why does he have his hands like that? He is looking ahead like the ball is coming at him, but who holds their arms apart like that to catch a ball?

Two oddballs that last I knew were in the hands of board members. An e127 Sam Rice with the most stunning ghost image on the reverse which was in the hands of Val Kehl and a T205 "blue" border which Leon had last I knew.
I love strange, and those were two of the strangest to pass through my hands.

This card makes me smile every time I see it because it reminds me of what Dimitri Young once said. They asked Dimitri, who never looked comfortable tracking the high foul popups that only the 1B can reach, after a particularly awkward effort what he thinks about while he is under the ball. He said: I just keep asking myself where the circus music is coming from?"

Great thread Leon! Although pretty much any card puts a smile on my face haha. It’s very cool to see how certain cards connect with people for all kinds of different reasons. There are plenty of funny ones (the Donnelly T206 with Hulk Hands and the more modern Jay Johnstone 84 Fleer “Budweiser hat” come to mind), but most of the ones that make me smile are not humorous.
Two that really stand out are T206’s… the Camnitz (arms crossed) and the Solly Hoffman. Camnitz grew up in Covington, KY which is basically Cincinnati and about one mile from where I live. The card to me though just puts you back to that era more so than any other T206, or pre-war card period for that matter... Tough guys through and through even when playing a child’s game and not making millions show for it. The Hoffman, to me, is maybe the most beautiful card ever made and again just looking at it takes me back to that time, or at least the way I envision it. Some honorable mentions include the T202 “Just Before the Battle”, the 38 Goudey Jimmie Foxx (the only mlb smile to rival Foxx in that card are early Griffey Jr cards), another T202 with Speaker/Wood (such a cool image of Joe Wood), and pretty much any of the Boston Garter’s. Not mine; however, this is (for some strange reason) one of my favorite T206 cards to see. It might be the joy it appears to bring its owner.
Perhaps it's also the common thread between Waddell and the card. In either case, he's not all there...
