I started to try to read through the last 2 pages of posts to catch myself up on this thread, but then I realized we’re talking about baseball cards and it never needs to get this serious.
Note to self, don’t mail cards to best western.

So, do you think the thief may have stolen exactly 54 lots as some sort of tribute to this forum? I mean, he has apparently netted 54 baseball cards.

The article said the two missing cards had a value of $90,000, the Matty went for $145,000 so I think he's safe.

Also pretty sure the culprit will do everything he can to get the location of those two cards to the police. Anything to mitigate at this point.

For the most part, the final resolution is about the best that could have been hoped for.
The consignors get the value they deserved, the bidders get the cards they wanted at the price they were willing to pay, the auction house gets their commission, and most importantly, the thief will likely spend some significant time in jail. |

There was a time grading was not tethered to the ultramodern perfect (or altered) card and you didn't need to alter a vintage card to get an 8.

I'd say today, the Williams might get a NM 7 and the Johnson a 4 VG-EX at best.

Not to beat them up because those are examples of grading at that time but the Williams might be a 6 today and yeah the Johnson is closer to VG and that VG-EX.

Maybe that's what they would get today but they've become way too harsh. They overgraded years ago and now they undergrade so my assessments are right in the middle.

It appears some (all?) of the cert numbers have been deactivated on the PSA registry. Anyone have experience with what may happen next in that regard?

If you are referring to the 54 cards that had been stolen and now recovered, I think it would be obvious that PSA would activate the certs again.

For anyone who won one of the cards that were stolen, were you able to purchase that card? I think only one member has said they won one of the stolen cards.
I do hope the two missing cards show up soon. |

+1 Ericl
Well summarized, Eric. That's about right. Within about a year or so after I got out of law school, or about 37 years ago, a question arose at the law firm about whether or not it would be a conflict of interest to accept a new client, due to already representing a similar client. I stayed quiet, my little opinion, had I had one, was about worthless. Some rather smart lawyers took turns talking, explaining various nuances of the ethics rules. Finally, this older lawyer who had grown up in a small rural county, and who up until now had been silent, leaned forward, cleared his throat, and said something to the effect of, "all I know is if you can't explain to the previous client why you did or didn't do something in about one sentence, then you probably shouldn't have done it." A fellow shouldn't sell something he doesn't have. |

And in turn, an expectancy that there was a good possibility of recovery may have informed ML's decision to continue the auction. Just speculating, but common sense would suggest there weren't that many suspects to begin with and they may well have had leads they were pursuing. You can't just go around kicking down people's doors.
