Did anyone come away with any of these great lots? My $7K snipe on the E104-1 World Champs lot of 10 didn't even get placed, as the lot sold for just north of $10K. The Plank looked awesome in this lot!
A few other nice lots with a T206 Cobb OM and caramel Wagner, Matty, etc. Nothing flew under the radar by any means though! Last edited by scooter729; 11-10-2023 at 11:57 AM. |

Had some really cool stuff across baseball and boxing, I was watching them all to see what happened. Seller must be ecstatic, doesn’t sound like he knew what he had.

Man I missed those..... there was an E card lot with a Wagner and a Mathewson also...... nothing got "stolen" but some darn good deals, especially on the first lot as pictured. For sure the seller didnt really appreciate what these were. You sneaky Net54 guys trying to snipe in secret.... a fellow just cant get a bargain around here any more LOL .

As soon as you see an auction closing in the morning you basically know the seller is clueless.

I didn't see these, but looking at the seller's history on ebay; you can call me sceptical.
Only one auction sold in the last year (for two 1990s gaming magazines), and before that, only several lots of US coins (mostly dimes).

I was the underbidder on one of the seller's lots...and it definitely wasn't a lot that ended in the 4 or 5 digit zone.

Couldn’t you have brought this to our attention before the auctions ended? What good does it do now when we can’t buy them any more? 😁 |

Sorry Phil - I know people typically love it around here when someone points out an ongoing eBay auction. Shame on me for not requesting Leon make it a sticky at the top of the page; we will do that for sure next time!!

It’s okay, Scott, we’ll let it go this time, especially since I don’t collect any of those cards. Next time, you know what to do……

Not sure what honey hole this guy found but I was able to pick up the 1912 Jimmy Lewis Zeenut for $41, a card according to Ed hasn't surfaced for 9 years. I can only hope this guy keeps posting.

Like you say, past sales are $5 dime rolls and inexpensive comic books. What was all that about "in their original English language." ? Not a buyer.

I'd wager the auctions are legit. Wading through his old feedback it looks like he sold thousands of of silver coins (one lot brought over 4 grand), and that's just from the feedback left. I tend to find only 1 in every 10 or so buyers leave any feedback nowadays. He's probably slowly sifting through a relatives estate or something. Not surprising a bunch of old cards that the uneducated might guess were just a bunch of beaters, were buried in there somewhere. That said, I do find some of the descriptions humorous and a little bit sad about the incoming AI listing revolution it looks like lots of sellers are already using as a crutch. From this listing of 5 rough T206 Piedmonts with a Ty Cobb: https://www.ebay.com/itm/15586703549...kAAOSwHPRlRP5Z Description: "This listing is for a set of five OBAK 1911 baseball cards, one of which features the legendary player Ty Cobb. The cards are of the single product type and are original, not licensed reprints. They belong to the T212 series and are considered vintage cards. The sports trading cards are in English language and were manufactured in the United States in 1911, during the Pre-WWI era." ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Agreed. Probably just poor use of AI. I still think he got pretty good value, perhaps knowing that coming across as naive might elicit more bidding since eBayers might think they had stumbled across a “great deal”. I was certainly watching all of those lots, but chose to pass when the bidding became fervent.
The E104-1 lot was clearly the best of the bunch. They each had the same back stamp (“Swift”) from a discovery from several years back (2007?). I think REA had auctioned a few of them - or at least a Plank.

Good points about Chatgtp or whatever he used. He could have just searched Cobb Piedmont on eBay and figured out what he had. I know nothing about coins or comic books, but I know not to list stuff before I know what it is. "Old crummy Superman comic book." etc. Good luck, all.

I'd be worried that the account hadn't had any transactions for over a year. Seems like the classic - take over of a dormant account. I'd be worried that it's all an illusion.

Yes, my concern was with the titles and descriptions. The pics were nicer than some power sellers on eBay. He knew the backs were important to scan and show.
My impression is that he is not from a foreign country, he's in a foreign country. I think ebay has guardrails for this kind of stuff now, so no one will be out 10 thousand dollars.

Congrats on the pickup, Leon - wonderful cards! I've only seen the version of the "Swift" stamp on the back, and not the "Swift's Variety Shop" - has that stamp version been seen before? (Apologies if that's a simple question - not an expert on the set.)

Congrats, Leon. Glad it turned out well.
About 2 years ago I bought a T207 Napoleon on eBay from a lady that had zero feedback. She wasn't happy with the sale price $125, and sent a message telling me I was a lucky guy, but she was going to send it anyway, even though she thought about giving it back to her husband.

Here is a 1911 pharmacy trade publication article in THE SPATULA about Swift's Variety Store that I found while I googled all over my keyboard.
Note that the street address on the full store name stamp is slightly different...242 W. 23rd St. versus 244 W. 23rd St. Sounds like at some point around this time frame that "This quaint store" moved next door. Brian |
