Default FS: 1912 Postcard Detroit Tigers Season Opener Flag Day Ty Cobb SGC 3.5

Incredibly beautiful postcard with Ty Cobb-Wahoo Sam, etc. Opening day in 1912 was the same week as the sinking of the Titanic-6 days apart I believe. The back is nice too. The price is NLFS PayPal no fees to me. Thanks for looking.

It appears that they are raising a league championship pennant (in addition to the U.S. flag), which would date the image to no later than 1910. The postcard itself may have been produced in 1912.

Default Perhaps the opening of Navin Field?

It could also be commemorating the opening of Navin Field which opened on on April 20, 1912. Navin Field was built on the same site as Bennett Park where the Tigers had played beginning in 1895 and was also located at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull.

On the other hand, you would think if it was commemorating that event, they would have mentioned it on the card somewhere.

Love the card BTW Joe.

Edit: Based on the attached picture and where the Flagpole is located relative to the outfield bleachers, the picture sure looks like it was taken at Navin Field.

This postcard always reminds me of just how much taller Cobb (2nd from right) was compared to his contemporaries. Glws

I looked up opening day in 1912 in the Detroit Public Library and there was a very similar image to this one but it looked like the picture was taken from a slightly different view.

A real favorite.

Best I could come up with long ago. Opening Day 1908. Raising the 1907 Champs banner?.. Nowadays, Im swayed to 1912
There is a very similar photo from that same day, indicating “1909” (crossed out) and “1912 added”. Needs more investigating

This one is postmarked 1914;

Here it is. It's from opening day 1912 when the new ballpark opened.

Here's another photo of it:

Those are two different pictures, but now I'm inclined to agree that they were taken on the same day. (The people in the bleachers are arranged almost identically in the two images, and the debris in the foreground also matches.) I think that Jim "Deacon" McGuire is the balding man in a sweater who has just taken his cap off (second from the right among the Tiger personnel), and he did not join the Detroit coaching staff until 1912.

Those pictures are great!

I can't see how that photo could be from any other event except Navin Field's opening day of April 20, 1912.

One last point. Bennet Park's flag pole was situated behind the bleachers, so there is no way the picture was taken at Bennet Park.

One last bump at this lowest price and then I guess it just wasn't meant to sell.
